Advice on baggage allowance needed

We are off to Ibiza on Friday, and was wondering about baggage allowance. Two adults two children going, each with 20KG allowance each, but we are only planning on taking two suitcases. Does this mean effectively that it is strictly 20kg per suitcase or as were only taking 2 suitcases for four people they will allow a little leeway on a case over 20KG as basically I'm pretty sure we will still be way below 80KG allowed. Hope this makes sense, and thanks for your help yet again! Sorry forgot to mention we're flying Thomsonfly.

Hi
You are allowed 80kgs between you so no problem if your two cases weigh over 20kg each...just watch that no piece weighs over 32kg as they will refuse to carry it.

Unless you're flying Ryanair, in which case you cannot share or combine baggage allowances.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0

Most airlines also allow 5kg for cabin baggage (check with your carrier) and if no cabin baggage taken, this can often be used in checked in luggage without paying excess, ie 25kg per person, still, the 32kg max per bag applies.0 -

From sloopychops link
"Can me and my daughter share a suitcase weighing up to 40kgs or do we have to have seperate suitcases? Each customer is usually entitled to a free total baggage allowance (hand and hold) of 25kg....You may take one item of hand baggage to maximum dimensions of 55x40x20cm and up to 10kg of your total baggage allowance on board the aircraft with you. ... All other baggage, up to your maximum allowance of 25kg, must be checked for carriage in the aircraft hold. All together your baggage must not weigh more than 25kg.If your total baggage weight exceeds your 25kg allowance, "
So no and it appears that the weight of hand baggage counts against your 25kg limit as well0 -
So summarising the Thomsonfly conditions for the four of you (assuming children are both aged 2 or over):
Total family baggage weight INCLUDING handbags max 100kg, but out of that total you can carry some through security to take into the cabin up to 10kg per person.
You can in addition carry on to the plane anything you buy once you are through security at the airport of course:-)
No checked-in bag is to exceed 32kg and no cabin bag is to exceed 10kg.
The check-in staff actually try to remember to label any bag over 20kg as "HEAVY" to warn handling staff. If a handler unexpectedly picks up a bag weighing over 20kg it is easy for them to hurt their back, especially when throwing bags around (and they do, literally, when rushing, which they also do a lot for their £6 something an hour!).
If a handler can rip a muscle in their back, you should think twice about filling ANY bag to over 15 to 20kg unless you know it has zips and handles strong enough to handle one handed abuse, and sides that will not rip/burst when the bag is grabbed/thrown. Many a handle will tear off if a 20 kg bag is picked up one-handed and roughly! Don't put any breakables inside unless thoroughly well packed inside something that will withstand the bag being tossed three or four times into various corners!
If your bag has telescopic handles built in, they might not work too well after just a few flights if you have made the bag heavy. The metal frames often get imperceptably bent during the landing phases of the "throwing around" process, often just enough to stop the handles working easily when you need them!
A 32kg bag might need to be particularly strong.0 -
Thanks to you all for your help. Hopefully the suitcases should be well under the 32kg limit - just wasn't too sure we would make the 20KG one. Probably somewhere in between. Cases are pretty full but haven't reach the point where we are struggling to close them yet - that's my logic for thinking we will be ok. Would have considered splitting them into 3 cases but we live outside Edinburgh, and are having to get the train down and then fly from Manchester, so don't want to struggle too much, and want to be able to keep a decent check on kids especially around the train stations.0
