28000 kWh Electricity Usage Per Year - Is that possible??

  • Is the meter a "dial " meter with 6 small dials with a pointer for each dial. These are always being mis read by customers and meter readers when pointers are on borders. Get the 10.000kwh one wrong and its a lot of money , over £1500

Good point, if this is the case that reading in Nov could be one where they've over-read by 10,000 kwh.

Thanks for all the responses. I re-read the bill, and the 29 May 2013 reading was "estimated". The period end (15 Nov 2013) was a real reading. So I downloaded the actual readings to take a look at it. I've put a link to the readings below.

The spike in usage actually occurs between 8 Nov 2012 and 14 Aug 2013 (9 months between meter readings). It looks like I generally average 850 to 950 kWh per month. But in this period I managed average 1855 kWh per month. Could be heavy heating in the winter I suppose, but feels unlikely. I don't have a hot tub or a pool!

(I can't embed the image in the post because I'm too new to MSE).

In terms of the meter itself, its in the common area corridor of the apartment building. It's a CALMU3 with a digital display: it would be difficult to misread. I've checked the serial number and unfortunately it is the correct one (at least it appears to be)

We have Gas, but its only used for cooking. Heating and hot water are electric. Heating is delivered through plug in wall radiators and an air-con system.

I can't see any reference to E7 on my bill, so I'm guessing I don't have this. There does appear to be some form of split tariff, as I get charged 21.17p for the first X consumption in a period, and then it drops to 12.96p. 98% is on the lower tariff.

No, that's the first and second tier pricing, nothing to do with E7. You are, as you say, on a single rate tariff. Heating and hot water on such a system is the most expensive method of all.
You need to be submitting reads at least very 3 months, a 9 month gap inevitably results in an eventual big catch-up bill and a hike in your DD.
Heating and hot water probably account for 80% of your total usage. Crazy installing a gas supply in such a property and then only using it for cooking, since gas heating would be about a third of the cost.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You could register with iMeasure and use this for weekly meter readings so you get an idea of your consumption over a period of time.

I have no connection with the company - it's free and I find it helpful to monitor my consumption, particularly when deciding when to switch tariffs according to usage.
