Eon Prepayment Meter Showing Gas Debt

Hi all,

We moved into a new place a few weeks back which has prepayment meters. Eon sent me a new card and key for Gas and Elec which we activated when we moved in before we topped them up.

We have never been with Eon before and are new customers.

We have noticed over the last few weeks that every time we top up the gas is not lasting long for the amount of money we put in so I checked the menu's on the meter tonight and on Menu 27 it says Gas Debt £302.53

Is this someone else Gas Debt that they owe to Eon as we are new customers and have never been with Eon before so we don't owe them anything.

On other menu's like 24,25,26 it says 0 and on the first Menu which says Owed it also says 0.

Is this a fault with the meter and are eon trying to claim back someone elses outstanding payment

Chris

    Hi Chris

The new card we sent should've cleared any debt belonging to the previous occupier.

Screen 25 displays the amount taken weekly to clear any debt on the meter. As this is set at zero, it looks as though there's nothing being taken in respect of any previous debt. The OWED setting also being zero seems to confirm this.

However, I would also expect Screen 27 to say zero as well. To be sure, I'd call our Prepayment specialists about this.

Do you use the Emergency Credit? If you do, whilst in Emergency Credit, we'll not collect any standing charges. These will be stored in the meter's memory ready for when you top up again.

When you top up, the amount of Emergency Credit used plus any accumulated daily standing charges will be reclaimed.

We do, though, make sure at least 30 per cent of the amount topped up goes to providing gas.

If the Emergency Credit is used, this can give the impression that the meter is taking more than expected when you top up.

    Hope this helps.

I concede that the pay-as-you-go-meter a complete disgrace. Having no choice but to get a prepayment meter installed in 2012, so as not to get into further spiralling debt with SSE when I lost my job, I find that the price hike which was announced by them is making my top-ups extremely difficult to maintain, particularly in this cold weather.

I have again contacted SSE by webform in relation to tariffs available on a prepayment meter, and I was sorely disappointed to be told that there is STILL no tariff available for prepayment meters, which I find completely unfair to myself and other consumers who pay by these means. I feel that the big 5 (excluding British Gas, who have tariffs available for prepayment meters) should be introducing tariffs in the near future, as I would personally prefer to fix my energy prices rather than paying the obscene prices that they appear to be charging at the present time. I am yet to receive a response from them, which I know in advance will be a load of old gubbins!

If I could leave and go with another energy supplier, I would in a heartbeat, but I am still in debit, thus am trapped, grrrrr...

Eon have booked for someone to visit to the wipe the debt from the other owners off the meter.

I will be moving from Eon soon back to BritishGas who I was with for 5 years at my last place as Eon cannot offer me a standard meter where BritishGas can without any issue. I would have liked to stay with Eon but I am not happy how they have treated me as a new customer so off to BritshGas we do in a few weeks time.

BG CEO Office have arranged for my meters to be changed once my account has moved back from Eon.
