you can't go wrong with some coloured pencils, a colouring book and some stickers!Happiness is not getting what you want - it's wanting what you have

(I can't remember the originator!)0 -
I would second that babychick, anything creative is a winner - be that paints, pencils or anything else (although, if you want the parents to remain friends with you - do not gift glitter!!)Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's learning to dance in the rain.

i have a 7yr old girl and she loves drawing and writing, so definitely that kind of thing, they have some lovely cheap stationery /craft stuff in wilkinsons, poundland, and whsmiths have sales on at mo, hths xOne day I will live in a cabin in the woods0

Depends on what she has already got and likes but I don't think you can go far wrong with some little crafty bits can be as simple as some paper/card, child friendly glue and things to stick on them, you can buy lots of cut out shapes, sequins, feathers etc and a tube of the dreaded glitter. If you have bits lying around like old buttons, broken costume jewellry (thinking of beads etc), bits of ribbon etc you can add these. If you look online or in library for simple things to make, you could put together a kit to make something specific with instructions etc.
Or a little baking kit if you have bits lying around - write out a simple receipe, weigh out ingredients like flour, cocoa powder in bags and add some sort of pretty topping like icing flowers or whatever and some cupcake cases.
A sticker book from a pound shop and a bag of choc buttons or cookies (if she is allowed) is a v cheap and easy gift and young children always seem to like.
Will be lots more but can't think just now!
edit: great minds think alike!

I just asked my 7yr old DDs and they said books with blank pages and pretty glitter/scented pens and stickers are good. They like shiny things

Or little craft packs where it comes with all the bits to make an item - pompom animals/beaded jewellery etc
Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!
Curtain pole installed in the living room
Paint curtain pole
Window quilts for landing window & french door
Add shrink film to the kitchen door & insulate
Insulate front door
Bubble wrap windows & french door
Wash front door curtain
Blind for the bathroom
Find wrist warmers & the wool socks!
Wash heated throws
Wash duvet & wool blankets
Buy vest tops to go under clothes and PJs
Buy nets for bathroom and kitchen
Buy or make blind for kitchen0 -
Thank you all so much for the idea. It looks like I can't go wrong with crafty things so that's pretty much what I will go for.
Thank you all xLucylema x :j0 -
At that age mine loved proper, grown-up notepads and pens, for proper grown-up writing
. They were all she ever wanted to give friends for birthdays too, and they went down well with the recipients.
Crafty stuff was great but she got most use from the stuff she perceived to be less childish. I bought both children (aged 9 and 6) a pack of 10 notepads from Poundland for Xmas (among other things ;p) and they loved them! two have been filled already and the rest are carefully divvied up.They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

I saw a huge pack of girly (fairy, I think) stickers in the 99p shop yesterday, that plus a blank notebook will keep her entertained for hours!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

second the crafty stuff - but my grandgirls always like the 'grown-up' stuff better than the kiddy stuff! I mean stick on gems, Peel offs and toppers! They raid my craft staff and unerringly go for the 'good stuff'! they disdain pompoms, pipe cleaners etc. they are nine now but have crafted since they were toddlers!
All of them love notebooks with sparkly covers, Gel pens, metallic pens, and my Promarkers!0 -
Also, bubbles. Big bottle or unusual shapes / attributes a bonus.
Good addition to any present for any child of either gender under the age of about 9 or 10. Heck, even I'd thank you for a present containing bubbles, and I haven't been a child for, um, quite a few years!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0
