  • Hi,

don't know about boot sales, but the charity shops are full of old tapes, selling at 5 for £1.

I bin all mine, the local charity shops will no longer take them and they don't get a second glance at a car boot.

Do you know anyone that still uses them? That should answer your question.

A lot of security systems still use them, I've seen a few places asking for them as they have to keep for a certain length of time/ repeated use wears the tape out etc...

Stick hand written labels with "!!!!!!" on them and watch them fly off the shelves at the boot sale.

I binned yesterday close to 50 blank videos which hadn't seen the light of day in nearly 10 years. I also dropped off to the Scope charity shop 5 boxes of pre-recorded commercial video's as they will take commercial ones (not blank ones).

There's no market for pre-recorded ones, but please don't send them to landfill as some charity shops still gladly take them. [Before Christmas, I picked up a few VHS box sets for my (retired) parents - basically titles that are rare, expensive or unreleased on DVD. They watch them once and then return them].

It must be a hit or a miss with which charity shops in which areas will actually take them. I've seen some in a couple of our local ones but mostly just DVDs. A couple of years ago I phoned our local hospice shop which is a large unit at a small retail area and they have 5 shops to supply in our local area of a few towns which they cover but they said that nobody buys them so unfortunately they all went in the bin as they hadn't been used for years. I hated doing that as I like items to be recycled where possible.

Might be worth phoning around a few of your local shops just in case.

  • You can give almost anything away on my local Freegle group. Some charity shops in my area still take prerecorded videos, most don't (at the one where I work, we don't sell them because hardly anyone buys them, they're worth only pennies and we can make more profitable use of the shelf space they would occupy, but they're one of the relatively few things that aren't recycled. If asked in advance we'll say we can't accept them, but if someone turns up with donations we don't turn them away even it's unsaleable stuff). Even those which sell pre-recorded usually can't take blank tapes unless they're unopened, in case there's anything dodgy on them.

My local YMCA still sells videos so may be worth trying one near you.
