Please help! Gas meter fault.

Hi,
I am with Scottish Power and my husband went to top up the gas and electricity yesterday.
Electricity went fine, but when he put the gas card into the meter nothing happened. It didn't even acknowledge that a card had been inserted. Hubby thinks the meter has flooded as when he put the card in it came out wet.
It's not an issue with the card itself, as the meter usually reacts even if the card is put in the wrong way or something.

Anyway, I tried to contact Scottish power and they're closed for the festive period. Their automated systems won't allow me access to emergency contact details unless I input my account number first. I don't have my account number to hand. Apparent it's at the top of my bills, but I don't have bills as my meter is prepay. I can't find any letters etc. from them that have my gas account number on.
So now it looks like I can't get any help until tomorrow at the earliest, which is awful.
I'm at a total loss here, can't even put the emergency credit on as that would require the card!
Does anyone know of any number I can contact to get help?
Thanks!

I phoned Barclaycard and didn't have an account number, when the automated system asked for it I just waited and after asking a couple of times it gave up and put me through to speak to someone. You could try that. Good luck!
Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

I did that. After 3 times it said "you have reached the maximum number of attempts. Please call back during our opening hours" and then cut me off.

Call 0800 111999 and say you have no gas, they will come out
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    Thanks!
If anyone ever has a similar issue, national grid forwarded me onto this number, which is for prepayment issues 0845 371 4778. The lady I got through to on that number has arranged for an engineer to visit today :)

If your gas meter, for some weird reason , has got water into the workings, any visit from an " engineer " will be a waste of their time and yours. You will need a replacement meter and an answer to how a basically waterproof meter has managed to get water inside. National Grid themselves are the only people to deal with this with another prepay meter. an "engineer " will be one of my colleagues with a "gist " card used to add emergency credit. Thats his only job in visiting prepays, he cant mend anything

6 hours after calling the engineer came.
The gentleman that came out was part of G4S. He fitted a new meter there and then and put £10 credit on until the new card arrives. My husband was correct, the meter had flooded. Apparently a common issue with outdoor meters, even when covered, due to condensation etc.
He'd travelled well out of his usual working area to do the job, which I was extremely grateful for. His next job was back on his own turf 90 miles away, so very very thankful that he agreed to come all the way out to me beforehand.
His next job was the kind of job you state, sticking credit on a meter for someone who hadn't received a card for their meter yet.
