Rant - taken for granted or what

OK I confess I am venting here.

Basically my boss has recently moved away and without even a meeting he has decided to now work from home only. Thats fine for him but we are feeling stranded here. (I used to be his PA, but that seems to have been ditched in the past year) No no one knows whats going on, or who is in charge on a day to day basis, or who to contact when, or even (in one case last week) who to contact in case of a disagreement between staff. The boss's 'work from home' seems to be 'work when I want to, answer the phone when I feel like it'. And thats his right in a way as he owns the company but it does leave us in the lurch. We have rumours he has appointed someone as a manager but this guy we have not yet seen at work and he knows nothing at all about our business. Its like employing a greengrocer to look after lab samples in a hospital, its odd (if its true).

So (getting to the point real soon) there was so much gossip and moaning and complaints flying around that I decided to put a stop to it and I called the boss to ask for a meeting so we can ask questions. He refused. I then sent an email (very polite) from us all saying that we were feeling left in the lurch and could he explain whats going on.

His reply was rude, hostile and negative and told me to stop stirring things up! He said it was up to him what he did and it was not up for discussion. There were also mentions of me lying about the fact that anyone was affected by his leaving.

I am so upset. I am between angry and crushed. If I could leave I would. I am working on New Years Day as a favour, I work on Sundays when no one else can cover, I do extra hours and do my best to keep unhappy clients happy. So to be spoken to like this I feel a right idiot. Taken for granted and treated like a fool. I may be prim but I dont take well to be called a liar. I am so cross. I want to walk out and go home.

Sorry. Rant over. Stopped stamping my feet now.

        I would rant too!!!!

I would do my contracted hours and absolutely no more if I were in your position.

I do hope your colleagues are supporting you.

i understand how you feel but what did you expect? him to agree he is being a !!!!!! and letting you chair the meeting ;)

some people are just not nice, you either accept it or look for another job, you can't change someone that acts like that.

It's like when you have a noisy neighbour and you ring the council to complain and they ask you "have to asked them to keep the noise down" if you are noisy you know you are noisy, you don't need someone knocking on your door to tell you, they already know it but as just inconsiderate, same as your boss, he knows how he is, he doesn't want someone he's paying telling him that.

My ex boss used to do this when he was planning on sacking somebody
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Lots of people would be very happy not to have the boss breathing down their neck in the office all day.

Any chance there's something else going on in the boss' life that's caused this? Relationship problems, health, money issues? Is the withdrawing over the last year in character for him, or not?

My boss and I have known each other for 14 years, I have worked for him for 8, and he does get into hissies now and again. This is the final straw today though, I am fed up with doing favopurs only to be spoken to like that. I feel an idiot for always saying yes when asked. He has not been well its true but even so I have supported him outside of work in every way I can. I think I may have Mug tattooed on my forehead.

Thanks for dropping by and listening to me moan. I feel calmer now but more aware that all the favour flowing in only one direction is not a positive step. My colleagues have now gone oddly quiet on the subject...........

Glad you are feeling calmer. You have answered your own question, it seems your colleagues are shrinking into the shadows. Do your contracted hours, no more, no less, and just get paid for doing your job! Let others address taking up the slack!

          2. to be honest I think you've approached this all the wrong way and I'm not surprised he's had a go at you.

            what would I have done?

Well on the basis you know him on a personal basis, wouldn't it have been a better idea to have seen him and discuss your concerns face to face?

However perhaps a concilitory phone call may smooth the ruffled feathers

He's the boss, he's not going to be interrogated by employees for his decisions, did you really think he would agree to a meeting???

As has been mentioned reel in the work you do for him if you feel like you are being taken advantage of.
