virgin media cable broadband settings

Options
a friend has been given a computer and has very little IT knowledge. it is running windows millenium. they have signed up to virgin broadband but when they put the set up disk in it says it will not install on this version of windows. i have been round to have a look but it has been so long since i had to do anythinng like this i wasnt much help. it appears that from the wall the cable goes into a small black box which must be a cable modem of sorts. all the lights appear to be on ok but i cannot get the computer to connect to the network. as the disk wont run it hasnt put any settings in and i cannot remember how to set up windows to see the lan. the virgin engineer had to use a usb to ethernet connector to fit it to his pc as he hasnt got a network card but then just left him to it.

if anyone has any ideas i would be grateful, i have been to the virgin website but it was a bit of a minefield.

thanks

matt

As the PC does not have a network card, you will have to find the USB drivers on the CD using windows Explorer and install them. i.e. point to the sub directory where they are located when the new hardware is found. The other alternative is to fit a cheap network card and then no drivers are needed.

    Hi
I have NTL broadband (now Virgin).
When they installed it (a few years ago) the disc provided said it's good for Windows 98SE onwards.
But maybe the discs provided now are different.
I haven't enough knowledge to help you set it up though.
But there is an NTL forum, perhaps they can help.
    It's here:-http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/

PS What espresso says is true, the USB drivers are on the CD.

I thought that you said that the installation CD would not run.

    Hi
I've just looked on Virgin's website.
It says minimum system requirements of operating system are Windows 2000 pro or Windows XP.
So I don't think you'll get much help if you ring them.

We have NTL, and my laptop and other computers are running on it without having run the installation CD, no problem whatsoever. A network card would be a good idea, then you should be able to run it without the disc.

there are two disks. one has the drivers for the usb which will run on all versions of windows and has one for windows me. the second is for the setup to virgin but it wont run. i assume that if i enter the settings manually i can get it to connect but i dont know what these are.

i also assume that the reason that the disk wont run on me is so that they dont have to train there advisors on too many operating systems

If they have just signed up, they should have the necessary log-in details on their paperwork. As stated no CD is needed to get on-line.

the thing that confuses me is that there is no modem listed in the devices on my computer so if it is a lan then why isnt it auto configuring to the virgin network. on my adsl router i enter all the settings within the router setup under 168..... i cannot find this on the virgin modem. so at the moment the modem doesnt know what it is connecting to.

i dont know if i am confusing everyone here but basically where do i enter the settings to allow the modem to connect to the virgin lan and what are the settings (ip address etc.)

    sorry for not being clear

When using a router, the router connects to the service after you have configured it. If you are forced to use USB due to no NIC, the PC instructs the modem to make the connection.

It really is much easier and better to use Ethernet!
