Taxing a car

I've had a similar problem on a previous car, when the MOT ran out on the last day of the month, and I needed car tax starting the following day. They wouldn't let me buy the tax early on the old MOT certificate as it has to be valid at the time the tax starts from.
aeubrey - can't you get round this by starting your insurance sooner?0 -
Thanks for everyone's help. The problem here is that the insurance has been paid for to start 1st May (I suggested otherwise to hubby but that's another story!)
We want the tax to start on 1st May.
The DVLA have said in their reply as posted on here earlier that insurance has to be valid on the day tax starts - that would be 1st May, unless we are misunderstanding their email which contraditcs itself anyway.
Obtaining a cover note isn't really an option as by the time it comes through it will be Tuesday and we can alledgely tax it then anyway. By this time to have obtained a cover note it will have cost us yet more money as well.!
It's not a huge thing not to be able to go out, it's just daft that you want (well want isn't the right word but you know what I mean!) to pay for your tax as a law abiding citizen and the dvla say NO WE DON'T WANT IT YET. It's just begging for people (not us) to break the law.
We have all the right documents, we will not break the law, why won't they accept our money in advance?

My mother & father spend quite a lot of time in Spain and take the car there in September and bring in back in the following June. When he takes it to Spain he can cash in his tax disc and complete his SORN, but only when he has got there (somebody does it for him). He is still insured (as long as he doen't go to France) and when he comes back to the UK in June he has to get someone else to get the tax disc as they will only do it 2 weeks before it is required.
They get all the benefits of sun etc no road tax, cheap fuel, beer and food. (Why am I still here, I should be on a plane doing the same).
It's nice to see the EU ensuring we are all the same.
Shrek101's comment of 1p on the price of fuel, aren't we already paying enough on the price of fuel. I can't understand how we have allowed the price of fuel to go up to the level it has again! (My wifes right I am a grumpy old man)0 -
I agree and they are also damn right dangerous, lethaly killing machines these Chelsea tractors.Mr_Skint wrote:On the subject of Taxation I'm pretty sure that you get a lower taxation for a 1.4ltr and below engine size well ok thats fair enough, what I would like to see is the big 4x4s getting heavily stung as, 1) They are a nuisance 2) They pollute more 3) They wear and tear the road surface more, now I know that people will think that I am singling theese Vehicles out, well you are right I am, I hate them.

If your parents effectively take the car off the road how can they get a new tax disc 2 weeks before it's required? I only ask as if it's been declared SORN then I would think that they would be in the same situation as us ie: can only get the disc 2 days before the start of the month.
In regards to the fuel price I don't think you're being a grumpy old man. If you are that makes hubby one as wellWe've allowed fuel price to go so high because everyone in this country moans but does nothing.
When the truckers blockaded the refineries at first I believe most people were in favour of them but as soon as the public started to feel the hardship, that is shops not getting food supplies in etc, then all of a sudden the public don't agree with the truckers and want them to stop .

Mind you don't get me started on car tax. Hubby had to have a new car due to accident so needed to tax the car two weeks before the end of month. He got you do know that you have to pay for the full month. Well yes  you stupid bint. He had no choice no car. no car meant that he could not get to work. Do they think that everyone is a moron.

Thats a bit harsh is it not? The woman was trying to be helpful and point out that if he could wait 2 weeks he would save a months tax - personally I regard that as good customer service rather than 'thinking everyone is a moron' - I am sure many people are not aware of the way car tax works, they just pay it.0 -

If your insurance doesn't start until May 1st, you're nadgered because of the way the system works. It's against the rules/regulations to issue a Vehicle Excise Licence (VEL) unless all 'T's are dotted and 'I's crossed. HMGov Plc do not give freebies, and, that is effectively what they could be doing by issuing a VEL under your circumstances. Most people get a reminder before renewal is due and can obtain their new VEL well before the due date. However, they will still have to have insurance and MOT (if required) covering past that due date. As has been said, there is no 15 day period of grace. The same as there is no 7 days to hand one's driving licence, insurance and MOT in. If the licence/whatever is not handed in within the 7 days from issue of the form HORT1, then the summons will be for the day and time that you could not produce the document to thePolice Officer.

Maybe moron was the wrong word. I/hubby do understand how the car tax system works and that it works on whole months and not part months. She may have thought she was being helpful.
But I feel that she was judging my husbands ability. If I had the choice to wait until the end of the month I would have done so.
I know it is a hard job in customer facing job done it myself in IT and it is very hard to judge someone ability. I would pitch it at a middle level and then change it if necessary. Other wise you offend everyone.

I would think the cheapest and easiest way is to get your insurance from Friday which will be pennies a day extra and then get you tax disc Friday ready to drive on 1st May.
Don't forget you MOT (if applicable) either because you won't get your tax disc without it.
Best of luck

You cant get a tax disc unless the insurance covers the car from the date that which the tax discs starts. I had this problem last November when I let my old insurance run out with NU (the car was garaged off road) and I was waiting to get a new policy out and get a better deal as a new customer, and get £25 discount as new customer.
But the PO wouldn't let me have road tax from 1st November (this was late October) because when the car tax started after a few days the insurance would run out. So I waited a week got insured then got 6 months road tax. The simply reason why I got 6 month was that in late April (tomorow I will get it) have 12 months road tax so I wont get the agro next time.
