Banks- brick carriers or droppers

There are frequent references to banks closing accounts of those claiming back unlawful charges and the ombudsman ordering compensation to be paid. My question is: are the banks good brick carriers or better brick droppers? How long are the banks to maintain accounts of often-delinquent customers for fear of the ombudsman?
Rather than threaten to close if repayment is claimed, perhaps letters along the lines of “We have reviewed the conduct of your account and have found it to be unsatisfactory, However we are willing to continue our relationship with you for a period of six months, during which time you will be expected to operate it within any agreed limit. If conduct does not meet or requirements during that period, the account will be closed with one month’s notice”.
Would customers expect the ombudsman to side with them in such a case? I’d hope not!

I think that is a very fair point.
However the banks have only got themselves to blame. If either singularly or together they should have gone to the courts by now to determine exactly what is legal and how much they can charge.0
