Tax credit overpayment

Hi
I have been receiving letters from June of this year for an overpayment going back to, what I have been told over the phone is 2011.
I have tried calling to find out what this relates to, both tax credits and the overpayments line have been really unhelpful and the overpayments line aggressive. I now will only correspond with them by writing, which they have ignored every single letter requesting a breakdown in laymans terms. They have now handed it over to a debt collection agency.
What are the rules and guidelines on overpayments? Can they just write to me years after with a figure and not justify it?
Luckily I am no longer dependent on these benefits though I am by no means well off, in fact I'm probably still entitled to them but they cause so many problems I refuse to claim them.
Any advice please

I think it is for 2010/2011 but there is no information apart from demand letters. It was from when me and my ex separated and I started the new single claim. I don't understand how this occurred, I've always given information promptly and accurately, to the penny.
I cancelled my tax credits from August this year.
Thanks for looking0
