Buying pet meds online

Hello.
I've got a puppy and 2 cats. I use stronghold on them monthly for fleas, ticks, worms etc but it's really expensive from the vet and I've seen them half the price online, however it says prescription only.
If I make a vet appointment to get a prescription it makes it the same price or more.
How do you get round this/make buying online worthwhile?

Thanks

  • Vets can charge what they like for the prescription so shop around. It also possible to get a prescription for 6 months rather than 1 month at a time.

My vets don't charge a consult fee for issuing flea/worming medication. If I want a prescription then they're happy to issue one on request if the dog has been seen on the last 6 months too. They charge a prescription fee (was £6, now £12 - RCVS guides state it has to be "reasonable") but the savings still make it cheaper to buy online

I just got a prescription for a 6 month supply of Onsior that Zara takes daily.

At the vets they charge £60.00 for 28 tablets, at AnimedDirect I paid £21.40 for 30 tablets.

The prescription cost was £10.40 so still absolutely massive saving.

You can order what you need from AnimedDirect, pay and then you get an order number. You write that order number on the prescription you get from the vet and post/fax it to AnimedDirect. Few days later you get your order.

That's great thanks. We are back in 2 weeks for vaccinations so I'll ask about it :)

You can just call them and ask for prescription over the phone - they have your pets details on file so will know the weight etc to write up a correct dose.

You can pay on the phone and they could post it to you or you can just collect the prescription.

My prescription states what I need and it says repeat 5 times so it is 6 months worth of tablets for Zara.

Ordered from Anime/paid online on Saturday, took the order number with me to collect prescription from the vets, wrote the number on the prescription to prove it was paid for, faxed the prescriptions from the vets as I was collecting it received today in the post.

If you don't have a fax or scanner, Animed will accept an email showing a clear photo of your prescription... saves 50p postage and the risk of arriving late or being lost.
  • I did the same thing recently but with Viovet. The vet was charging £85.00 for the tablets, I paid just under £8 for a prescription and the tablets themselves came up to £35.00 - a £42 saving is not to be sneezed at, my friend. :p

I ordered online, they emailed me within an hour for a prescription (although you have a choice to upload it at the time of sale, maybe even before, too) and I scanned and e-mailed it in. Came within a couple of days, too.

Your vet might be charging for a consult because he hasn't seen the animal within whatever period of time they define that qualifies them to say that the pet is 'under their care', I think that's usually yearly, maybe 6 monthly. You should definitely get them to put as many repeats they can on one prescription!
  • Legislation was introduced in October 2005 that specified that veterinary surgeons must provide prescriptions if requested to do so as an alternative to supplying medicines directly from your veterinary surgery. Your veterinary surgeon is not allowed to discriminate between clients asking for prescriptions and those who don't. Veterinary surgeons are able to charge a nominal fee for writing the prescription. This charge varies but the average is between £6.00 - £8.00.

For long term medication, it is cost effective to ask your vet for a repeat prescription. This can be used as many times as the prescription states, without the need to revisit your veterinary surgeon. Prescriptions are valid for up to 6 months maximum but can be restricted to what your vet feels is necessary. There are exceptions to the rule where they are valid for a shorter period of 28 days depending on the prescription medication.

I use Vet Medic www.vet.medic.com Pet-drugs-on-line http://www.petdrugsonline.co.uk/site.aspx?i=ho0 and VioVet www.viovet.co.uk/index.html too. If you order anything from Viovet and you haven't used them before, you can get £3 off using this code VVRMPJZYU as long as you spend over £15. (All these companies are all based in the UK and sell genuine products, beware of using companies based outside the UK as some sell fake products.)
