Tv recommendation

Due to fuel saver and 02 discount looks like currys are a good bet for a new tv were looking at. Looking at 40-42" probably smart at between about £350-£500

I'm not bothered about gaming or films really just a nice tv to watch sky and possibly start using some smart functions on. Looks like lg or Samsung on offer currently are probably best but would appreciate thoughts

  • I got a Samsung Smart TV (Freeview HD, Full HD 1080p, Wi-fi) and few weeks back and am impressed by it.

Built in wi-fi was a big help rather than having to run an Ethernet cable. Also, when setting up for the 1st time, connect a USB mouse as it makes it far quicker to navigate menus.

    define 'smart functions'.
Everyone has convinced themselves they want a smart TV, but don't know what a smart TV is!
You mention you have Sky - can assume it's an HD box? It has i-Player and other catch up stuff (the main 'smart' feature I reckon) already, so don't waste your time looking for it in a TV too. Anything else to connect to the TV so we can consider how many, and what type of ports you need? Do you have an aerial connection to use with this TV? Can you plug your TV into a router easily to take advantage of any smart-ness?

Sky box , DVD, wii, possibly looking into sonos. Have aerials etc. and wifi thing for sky box to get I player. No preference just seems that for extra £50, £100 it makes sense as generally these TVs move through the house to bedrooms when we decide to get new ones

But you still haven't said what you want. You can get iPlayer etc. through that Sky box (and the Wii!). Sonos won't affect your TV. You'll need a network cable plugged into the TV wherever you move it to, or else make sure you buy a WiFi TV. No point paying this extra £50-£100 if you'll never be able to take advantage of the features.

I have this LG TV. Bought is at much higher price when it first came out in May. It is not the greatest smart tv but it has built-in Wifi and as an average viewer I find the picture quality excellent. Now down to under £370 :o

I bought mine from John lewis so if you can pricematch then JL will also have the 5 years Guarantee

£50-100 extra for Smart seems abit excessive.

Especially if you don't really need it.

    Sorry for the semi-hijack
I thought a smart TV had internet access? Am I wrong? And having internet access can you view all websites, or just a select few?
Thanks, and apologies for jumping in OP

All depends on whether the TV has a web browser installed or not.
A £30 smartphone can turn your TV in to a "smart" TV with the right apps installed.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

britishboy - there is no proper definition of 'smart' for TVs. It's meant to come from smartphones, which at the time were different because they had a proper OS, ability to install apps, and possibly access the internet.
Every different model of TV will have slightly different smart features so you need to decide what activities you want to do on your TV (browse web, watch Netflix, watch iPlayer) and dig into the details of the TV specs to find out if it can do those things. All Smart TVs are not created equal!
