My daughter has been bought an Asus K55A which as usual these days does not come with any disks.

It is loaded with Windows 8 which we are not familiar with.

Can someone please tell me how we make a back up disk please.

My husband tried last night but couldn't seem to find the options to make a disk.

Thanks.

    Look here...

But that might be for just Windows 7. I'm guessing that Windows 8 may require a USB drive of up to 16GB.
Just go to Settings on the Desktop and choose 'Create a Recovery Drive'....

Thanks, I did see that but as you say I thought it was for windows 7 not 8.

I will need to go and buy a bigger pen drive as we only have a couple of 8gb ones.

We have blank disks, is it not better to use those instead of a pen drive?

Once you've selected Create a Recovery Drive, there's also a setting in W8 which is labelled 'Copy the Recovery Partition from the PC to the Recovery Drive' which may appear depending on the PC.

If this tickbox is enabled, it will include a backup copy of the recovery partition on the USB in case the disk dies.

However... I have seen reports that the W8 recovery process isn't always that reliable when disaster strikes and the hard disk dies.

So I'd recommend additionally using one of the free backup tools (Macrium or whatever) to take an additional image of the disk.

I think I also saw that Windows 8.1 only writes a recovery drive to USBs or other disks; I believe writing to DVDs is no longer included in 8.1.

In Windows 8, the old Windows 7 image backup and recovery disc routines are buried in a section called File History. Type File History and it should take you there, then root around for the Win7 utility.

The image backup can be made to any external hard drive but as has been said, the recovery 'disc' can only be written to a USB stick (I used a 16GB Sandisk cruiser).

Thanks everyone, I shall get a bigger usb stick and then try then, I may (will) probably be back for a bit of help along the way.

    Happy New Year to everyone!

I'm just adding this in case it is of any use to anyone with an Asus laptop with Windows 8. Mine, a X550C, had no software built into it to make a recovery disk. But I found a thread on another forum in which someone had the same problem, I think it was the same laptop as the OP's. The AI Recovery Burner was not supplied on the laptop (nor any other recovery software) and in the end they contacted Asus who sent them a download link to some recovery software.

The thread did not mention the name of the recovery software so I contacted Asus myself, they told me to download Asus Backtracker (http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&s=480&m=ASUS%20Backtracker&os=&hashedid=n/a)

I've just finished making a USB recovery stick, it used around 14GB. I was going to post this in a new thread but I found this thread.

It seems odd that nothing is included to make a recovery disk but for some reason Asus have decided not to include it on at least some Windows 8 laptops.

Thanks very much for the info.

We haven't tried making a recovery disk yet, I bought one of the 16gb sticks from Argos the other day so we are going to try that.

I think we got to the screen that says the computer wants to make changes or whatever and my daughter panicked and asked me not to go any further.

Will have to have a look when she is at school!
