I share your concerns about punishment for those who kill cyclists, but it's not murder.

Some figures from the recent clampdown on cyclists and drivers in London after it was announced the clampdown is going to be extended

Overall figures show that cyclists fines amounted to less than a third of those handed out with vehicle drivers making up the majority.

Even more worrying though is how two thirds of HGV's stopped were found to be defective.

I thought 4,000 fines in 2 weeks was a huge amount. According to this website cyclists make up a 1/4 of road users, so proportionally speaking, cyclists received more tickets than vehicle drivers.

If the police are looking for offences in areas where cyclists are known to commit offences, the proportion of tickets dished out to cyclists is going to be higher than the vehicular ratio suggests.

The whole ticketing operation is yet another attempt to say "nothing to see here - our infrastructure is fine. It's people that are the problem".


Build proper cycle infrastructure and people will use it, and be safe doing so.

true, but is that the case here?

That scenario could equally be applied to vehicle drivers.
