Proven herself how? Shes one of the most successful race mares of the last few years, is firmly ensconced on the TBA elite mares list,is the perfect age to be breeding from and its what I bought her to do (with time that if she flops this year as well then shes still young enoug to bring back into work).... she came along a little earlier than ideal from my point of view - but mares like her dont come along to people like me very often at all, I would have been an idiot to pass her up. :)

    £150 paid off vanquis :)

Then please accept my apologies. I must have misunderstood when you mentioned she might make a decent riding horse. I assumed she hadn't yet achieved anything. Good luck, hope all goes well :)

Lol, I'm sorry too - reading my answer back it sounds quite abrupt - didnt mean it to!! I haven't said anything about her really, cos I keep having similar thoughts about doing it at all, but it's the reason I am putting myself through all this in the first place! :D I'm incredibly lucky to have her, we were unlucky last year with how it turned out, but the stud I'm going to in a few weeks are very positive about her and the likelihood of it all working. When I bought her she had stopped racing becuse she was getting a bit sour and not enjoying it, then she went a bit lame in front so they decided to call it a day. She's apparently a really nice ride, and if she doesn't get in foal this year then there's nothing to say that the two years off won't have settled whatever it was that made her lame. (Hence the should make a nice riding horse comment)

She's off at the end of march, so will be keeping everything crossed for success. It certinally won't be for want of trying, the stud are just as keen as me (if not keener - they said they don't get mares like her there very often either!!) and she's in as good condition as I can get her, it's up to her now....

Paid a bit more off my payable cards, still haven't don't my transfers, need to get my !!!! in gear - in fact, I shall go down and phone them now !!!!

Have a fab day everyone !!!

Hi Trudij I'm trying to follow the horsey diaries as they make me feel better. All those surprise costs! I was initially slightly sceptical too, I admit, about breeding from your mare, as there are just so many horses being abandoned, poor quality ones being bred etc. But it sounds like she might be a good candidate :). Only thing I would say is don't assume you will make a profit (I don't know if you are) as no-one I know who breeds does it for the money, sadly. But then not many people with horses think of them as anything but places to donate their salary to...

Anyway good luck with the diary, I will go and subscribe now :)

Oh horses equal permanently broke as far as I am aware!!! :) im just glad I don't ride her at the moment, I've steeled myself to her owning two headcollars, two rugs and that's it - if I was doing loads with her it would be constant and bling temptation and "ooh that's pretty" - I find myself doing it with catalogues all the time!!!!!

The long term plan is to keep the foal. If it's a colt though, I might offer him for sale - I haven't decided yet. The sire I've picked is a very good one, so being out of her as well he (in theory!) should be worth a fair bit, but that is just a bonus - I honestly couldn't care less about that side of things, and I'm only likely to sell if I absolutely have to.
If it's a filly then I would do my damnedest to be able to keep her and run her to see if she's any good, with an eye to breeding from her in the future. Breeding racehorses isn't like breeding normal horses, there's a whole lot of prep and study goes into each one - I wouldn't be breeding at all if i had a normal horse, much as I love them - as you say, there are too many around as it is.

I've worked in racing most of my working life, the rest of it I've been at an equine vets and helping out with rescues, and having had two aborted foals at 6 months and one year barren, I'm well aware now of most of the pitfalls more than the successes (!)- I've got many friends who own and run studs as well - I'm lucky that I've got a lot of very clever brains to pick all the way through if I want them. :)

It will be fun. And expensive - I've got no rose tinted glasses any more, but I do love a challenge!!!!

Put Evans onto vanquis today and registered my. Nationwide card as lost so as soon as the new one arrives I can pay off vanquis and put it in the "dire emergencies only" draw.... I'm getting there..... :)

Haha I used to be the same! I still find myself window shopping even now then have to remind myself I no longer own any horses :rotfl:

Cant beat a good thoroughbred. Neither of mine actually raced and the one is really well bred - previous owners were going to breed from her but luckily decided not to. She is a great event horse. Just a pity I have lost a bit of confidence as I have grown older :) I would have loved her 20 years ago!

I thought about breeding once and then chickened out but I would like to follow your story - hope it all goes well.

Same! That plus a hip problem which makes being in the saddle for more than an hour or two excruciatingly painful made me hang up my jodhpurs several years ago. If I still had the land I'd be quite happy taking in unrideable horses just for the companionship and love they give, if nothing else :smileyhea

I have a hip problem too :) well actually in my pelvis but this mare makes it easy - I only dabble at 80 cm but she has done higher. The other mare has a short choppy stride and I cant jump her. The bigger one just takes everything in her stride and it just flows if that makes sense. There will come a time when I am sure I will have to pack it in completely.

She sounds wonderful and reminds me very much of my old mare who sadly died aged 26yrs. I owned her for 22 of those years. I never replaced her. I can't :(
