Ribblesdale Things to do?

Dear all

The OH and kids are off to a lodge in Ribblesdale, lancashire for Feb half term. We have hard saved for Merlin passes so plan to do Blackpool for a couple of days.

Any suggestions for other things to do in the ribblesdale/Skipton area? We have a 4 and 13 year old so quite an age range!

We tend to like castles or museums etc.

Any help welcome!

Milly

Thanks Bluemeany, have you been? It looks good but wondered if it would have child appeal?

  • Skipton Castle is nice with lots of space for the 4 year old to run around. Skipton also has a canal where you can go for a barge ride. You are also close to Clitheroe which has the castle museum.

Bolton abbey and sawly abbey are both in ruins and free to look around and well worth a visit especially Bolton abbey very picturesque, it had a free car park too but its very narrow entrance and on a slight bend so take care and enjoy your trip.
  • Thankyou Skitler and Craftygran.

I will look up bolton and sawly abbey and we will DEFINATELY make the trip to Skipton castle.

    Getting quite excited now!

I work for the Dalesman mag in Skipton although currently on mat leave (this is not a shameless plug just an idea!) we do a guide also at £3.50 which has vouchers, ideas for days out, walks etc? (I'm not posting a link in case people think I'm spamming) There's one for Yorkshire Dales which is where you'll be pretty much so a poss idea?

There's alsorts not just Skipton castle in the area. Take a trip to Grassington, you've kids so try Forbidden corner, although it's a book prior to visiting place it's meant to be amazing, it's a folly that as build last century. Go to Malham tarn, to Skipton which is a market town, so on street market is Mon, wed, fri and Sat. Bolton Abbey, have afternoon tea at Dev arms. Harrogate is not far, neither is Ilkley, go have a brew and a fat rascal in Bettys. Erm, Keighley and Worth Valley railway isnt far either, steam railway and again, kids love it. Haworth isnt far either and always worth a look around. Dont think you'll spend a full day there though like alot do, it's a couple of hours unless you go walking on the moors.
There are alot of free museums in Bradford and Keighley. The kids may like the national media museum as it's a top destination around here nd loads for kids to do and free! Keighley have a museum in the park, but cant remember the name of it, so you'd need to research that one. There's a few old houses- national trust wise kicking around too. Eureka in Halifax may be a bit young for the oldest but the youngest would love it. Think that's about all I can think of but have a lovely time x

  • Skipton castle is great, took mine 6 and 4, great cafe, loads of run space.

There's also the wild boar park in chipping. Great day out, loads to do.

If you get stuck on a wet day, there's giddy kippers, massive indoor climbing frame soft play with cafe.

    Have a great time.

The car park is no longer free, 5 quid... Ouch... But it's by far the better of the two abbeys. Strid wood is at Bolton, miles of woodland to play in...
