Laptop options

I've got an old Compaq AMD Sempron-based Windows XP laptop that I bought in 2006 which has had a hard drive crash (not fatal, can still access it via a USB-hosted caddy to get the data) and I feel I've got the following options:
  • Replace the hard drive and reinstall XP or Linux on it
  • Buy a new laptop or netbook with Windows 8
  • Buy a new tablet
I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on what they'd do - there's a computer shop near me that's offering to buy broken laptops for cash: I haven't been there yet to see what they'd offer, but would be interesting to find out.

not worth much unfortunately, £10-20 maybe. £10 for another hdd and reinstall may be a better bet, might make £50-£70 for a fully working machine on ebay or local fb selling site.

  • Thanks for your thoughts, GunJack - I don't think it'll be worth much, I might just take it to that shop anyway and see what they say. I heard about them through an ad leaflet popped through the door the other week that said they're definitely interested in buying broken laptops...

Doesn't hurt to go and ask I suppose :)

hard drive crash, or windows corruption, if the latter, just factory restore it, or reinstall windows and it should work like new. if the former, a new hd is £40 or so.

  • Putting in a SSD does wonders for even elderly laptops. I have a 2006 vintage HP nc6400 with SSD disk and it's fine for basic work, far faster than it was with a 5400rpm hard disk.

Full model number? Compaq Presario V3000? You can refurb it yourself for a few squid. You can take the RAM up to 4GB. Replace the HDD for perhaps £15.
They'll probably ask you to pay them to take it away.

I'd be more inclined to pop a s/h hd in it if required...hence £10 ;)
