Should I switch insurer?

  • If the local garage had put its fuel up to 6 quid a litre would you not have gone 10 mins out your way to get it cheaper?

No I would have got it at one of the many garages I passed on my 90 minute commute.

Before you cancel ask them to confirm in writing the total cost of cancelling, including all charges and premium due.

(Assuming you are outside of the first 14 days of the new policy, it won't be cheap to cancel, and if you are paying on the drip, expect early termination charges for the credit side of this)

If you decide to cancel, then comply with any conditions quickly (many insurers won't process a cancellation till you return the certificate - if that is the case, use recorded delivery to send it back).

Get your new policy to start as soon as the current one ends (Not before, as then your 1 year NCD won't be available to you to use on the new policy as it is in use with the current policy)

I got my documents by email so I don't know how it would work if they wanted the certificate back? I was told on the phone they would only charge me up to the date of cancellation plus £30.
I'm quite annoyed as on one comparison site tesco gave me a quote of £800!

As previously advised, get that confirmed in writing as a figure, (assuming you have past the first 14 days)

I've just cancelled my car insurance with hastings and asked them to send the confirmation via post - they said they'd do that and I would have to send the certificate back to them in a SAE they'd send to me. I presume tesco will do something similar. You'd be best speaking to them on the phone and mention that you got a cheaper tesco quote online, you never know they might match it or do it cheaper ! Hope you get it sorted whatever you decide to do. All the best.
