iPad security etc.....

We have bought DS an iPad 2 for Christmas. It is a thing of beauty but we are unsure if we need to install antivirus software on it?

I've tried looking through the Apple boards but there are several different opinions. Also, the thing seems to be plagued with ads, we run Firefox with Adblocker on our Windows pc and laptops, is there anything similar for iOS?

Sorry for being so dense, we are Apple newbies!

When you say it is "plagued with ads", what websites are you seeing the ads on, or is it when you're playing free games?

You don't need anti-virus software because the only way things get installed on it is via the Apple Store.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?

    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

He does get ads when playing games but I guess that is to be expected.

When he does a Google search, ads appear all over the place (just text, not graphics). These are "targeted", I have tried going into the preferences but all I can do is uncheck the boxes which state that he is male, of a certain age, etc etc.

I think we have been spoilt after seeing no ads for years on our pc!

Is he using Safari as the web browser?
If so, has he tried searching using the address bar?

Also, can you give an example of a search he does?
(I'm asking because I've never had an issue with ads when using the Safari browser on iPads or iPhones)

Nor have I. There are the usual sponsored/paid results of course, but that's normal for Google (plus they are usually the website you wanted anyway, if you are looking for a specific organisation!).

You don't need an anti-virus on iOS
You don't want to leave your Credit Card details on the app store, buy a voucher to limit the how much can be spent on in-game purchases (or password in-app purchases using iOS)
I use iCab Mobile browser app on iOS, it contains an adblock facility

Also you can suppress ads (and pr0n etc.) for all devices in the house by setting your home's router to use the OpenDNS service which stops URLs of ads getting processed.
