Woah -- I only used a single exclamation mark. How upset do you have to be to use boldfaced capitals, I wonder? :p

Cheers for the clarification, though. :)

Note to self. Must make more effort to proof read before posting.:)

I've rebuilt mine a couple of times, just for the hell of it, and maybe I'm limiting myself by keeping it on a 2GB stick (Puppy, Hiren's and Avira Rescue)....

...However, I've just reclaimed a 16GB stick from Mini-Gun #1 after getting him a bigger xbox hdd, so......

...I feel it may be time to play some more :rotfl:

    One thing to note.

I've found some relatively modern devices will not boot from my 16GB, try the 8GB, no problem.

Yet 10yr old stuff doesn't have a problem recognising 8GB.

If you intend using a mobile broadband dongle then go for Ubuntu as it's the only distro which lets it work 'out of the box'. If anyone can tell me of a smaller distro which does so, then I'd be most grateful.

A linux install can be very small - my current Debian installation is 3Gb for example
That is huge compared to some I have used.
I find 16 gig ram is great for multiple OS's on one PC.
Unless you are trying to run two OSs simultaneously, what would be the advantage of 16GB RAM? Or even that amount over 8GB?
...I thought Linux had gained a decent market share; however, having looked at Wikipedia it's still, percentage wise at least, quite low. Surely though it's never likely to trouble the OS monopolies of the big players.
No doubt that's what Windows Mobile thought before Android appeared.

Come on: Comparing a single version of an OS (android) pushed by one of the biggest players in the business - Google as a competitor to MSMobile is hardly the same as comparing umpteen Linux Distros from various sources with various desktop options as a competitor to mega MSWindows.

    - that's exactly what I'm saying

with the virtualisation capabilities of i5's and i7's, I personally would not go through the hassle of going for a dual boot setup when I can simply have a virtual PC open running Linux while I'm on windows , perhaps linking them up with synergy. Also, what if I want XP to run some older software, windows 7 , and a virtual Linux all at once

16 gig is a lot of fun in that regard, and if you're doing stuff like that it's an advantage to have that much.

Not to mention the ramdisk I use to stick all the things I need speed for on, that's another 4 gig, just for some startup scripting and browsing caches

edit: photoshop 64 bit slung in too... wonder why I was silly enough to go for 16 gigs and not get 32 gigs!!!

    Regards
    Andy

I've set up my PC running Ubuntu with VMware Player and have Linux and Windows guest VMs running on it.
