Moving a body within the UK

My Gran passed away just before Christmas and was staying with my Dad at the time, which is about 2 hours away from where she usually lives. We would like her funeral to be in her home village so all her friends can attend, but when looking at getting her moved back there all the quotes we have include a significant charge for every county border they cross on the way. Is this correct? The bereavement team at the hospital said it's a con and that councils/local authorities in fact make no charge for crossing into their county. Has anyone got any experience of this? At the moment it seems like a rip off, and although we want to get her back home she certainly would not approve of paying loads of money if it's a con! Obviously we know there is going to be a cost for moving her, but it's this seemingly made up fee for crossing borders that doesn't sit very comfortably with us.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks.

    My condolences on your loss.

My mother died 3 months ago in a Nursing home near me where she had been for 2 years. My plan was always to take her back 'home' to be buried with my dad.

The nursing home arranged for a local undertaker to collect her body and I then dealt only with our chosen undertakers in Norfolk (4-5 hours drive away). She was collected over the following weekend (using a specialist collection firm based in Norwich I believe). The cost of the local undertaker and the transfer were itemised in my final bill and totalled £350.

    Hope this helps.

I believe the bereavement team are right, and that in good MS style you should get 3 quotes.
DIY is an option, but perhaps a reasonable quote would be less distressing?

    I'm sorry for your loss.
  • I'm sorry for your sad loss of your grandmother.

The "crossing county borders" charge is nonsense - perhaps this is their way of describing the higher price than usual.

Yes, there will be a greater charge for transport than if it were all a local situation due to the greater mileage and time (much as with a taxi journey), but there are no fees for crossing from one county to another.
  • http://evansaboveonline.co.uk/after-death/transporting-the-body/ When my Father In Law died while on holiday abroad, his body was repatriated to Cardiff airport, and there was a charge for crossing from Wales back into England, but other than that, there are no other fees for crossing county boundaries. It also looks as if you don't 'need' a 'special' vehicle.
