company in administration - how to return goods?

I bought some boots from debenhams on 30.11.13 as a xmas present for my daughter. Unfortunately she did not like them so I went into the store today only to be advised that as Barratts has gone into administration the shop will not refund the money and I was directed to Duff and Phelps who are acting on behalf of Barratts. The shop assistant wished me luck as he said it would be unlikely that I would be refunded my money! I cannot understand why, when I bought the boots on 30.11.13 and having found out via the internet that Barratts went into administration on 11.11.13, Debenhams are able to abdicate all responsibility for the refund as they must have known at the point of my sail! The £32 went from my bank account directly to debenhams - why don't they have any responsiblities? Does anybody know?
Thank you:(

Did you purchase them from a physical store? Your post sounds like it, in which case you actually don't have any legal right to return so unfortunately I'm not sure that you can force anything in this instance and you would need to try going down the good will route.
What returns policy was displayed at the time of purchase, does your receipt say anything about returns?0 -

I think that the Barratt counters were set up as concessions in the Debenhams stores, and because of this, Debenhams returns policy won't apply.0 -

If as you say its a concession then its not Debenhams responsiblity OP.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Hi
Thank you for all of your replies. My debenhams receipt states I can return in January however from replies it would appear that this does not apply to a concession.0 -
It is routine for a retailer in receivership not to accept returns unless faulty... even then, it is something that will be referred to the Receiver.
The same thing happened with Peacocks as an example.
If it was a concession - which the assistant seems to think it was by referring you to the Receiver - then Debenhams is not responsible for the transaction.:hello:0 -

If your Debenhams receipt states you can return it then do so. If you have any problems ask to speak to the manager and show him the statement on the receipt.0
