My father passed away in 2009 , he re married, and moved away, his then wife contacted me to say he had died. I have never seen the will. I dont speak to her. How do i go about seeking a copy. He was originally from Manchester, but lived in Greece just before he died and was buried there
Thanks

You can apply via the courts if it was in England

I'm sure there will be others who can advise if it was overseas, but this is a good place to start.

If they had most things in joint names, the estate may not have gone to probate.

Also did he die domiciled in Greece as it seems from your post? If so then unfortunately the will should have been proved in Greece and not the UK

Probate would only be required if he still held assets in the UK that needed to be sold/released. If all his affairs were in Greece - that is where any will would be dealt with.

hi, yes he died in Greece where he spent last 8 months of his life.
  • Can anyone apply for a copy of a relatives will? My Uncle died many years ago and he had always said he would leave my brother and I money in his will. At the time of his death he was in what can best be described as a Menage a Trois, and the other two persons were his executors and almost certainly his main beneficiaries.

Neither my brother nor I heard anything after his death so we assumed he had not actually left us anything. All parties are long since dead now but I would be interested to see the will. Nothing to gain now obviously, but just interested.

Is it possible? I only have a name and place of death, no date of birth or death.

If the will went to probate it is a public document and anyone can buy a copy of it.

Finding it on the information you have might be a problem - the more you can narrow it down the better. The probate office will search a range of years - as will some of the geneaology sites

If it didn't go to probate it - officially - doesn't exist. You might still be able to find a relative who has kept a copy - a big might, as would their willingness to give you a copy.

If it went to probate then, yes.

It's possible to find the date of death and birth from the available records on sites like Ancestry. Most libraries have a subscription or there's several people on here, like me, who will do a look-up. Don't give out the information on a thread - use a PM.

However Ancestry only have deaths up to and including 2006. The wills online only go to 1966.
