How do you organise yourself?

Options
I am looking for advice!

I was wondering how other people organise themselves/their homes/their families.

I have bought 2 diaries and a notebook in an attempt to be more organised in the new year but I don't really know where to start.

Any advice welcome!

Try this thread for lots of advice:

How to organise everything in my life OS?

I'll add your thread to that one later.

  • I use the FlyLady.net calendar. Not cheap, but big spaces and stickers work for us. Hang it next to where you eat/in the kitchen and look at it twice a day & write on it EVERY time something comes in.

If you get a school newsletter, go through it every week and add stuff to the calendar. I write on everything, even which day/week is rubbish/recycling week.
  • Excellent, thank you both so much - I will get reading!

I think the Organised Mum Home Planner is very similar to the Flylady one and may work out cheaper without the international shipping costs. This is the one I've used for several years.

Hi, first thing I would look at is what do you want to organise? Does anything actually go wrong due to things not being organised?

I have a note book whick I carry around with me. I write lists of seeds I want or have got, for example. Films I've got on DVD etc. I have a cakender on the fridge for appointments.

Definitely write an inventory of everything in your freezer and possibly storecupboards as well. BUT, it will only work if you make yourself update it regularly.

Write a meal plan and shopping list and 'shop' from your stores first before buying anything else. Keep a notebook handy in the kitchen and write down things you run out of so you won't have to run to an expensive corner shop if you run out of anything.

I don't do flylady but try to deep clean rooms on a rotation so they all get done regularly. Then a quick vacuum and dust is enough in between. Clean/tidy the kitchen and bathroom after each use.

If you can afford it, do most shopping for food and fuel on a credit card (ideally a cashback one) and then pay it IN FULL:money:every month. It means you only need to sort out your bills etc. once a month. If that won't work for you try having separate purses or envelopes for various budgets.

    I write in my diary
    bdays in red ink
Menu or meal for each day next to the date in black
Todo's and reminders in blue ink like pay rent, read meters.

On the fridge I have a routine plan for cleaning.

Mon wed fri- put washing on and hang on airer. general tidy up everywhere, dust, wipe down bathroom and bleach. Vac everywhere and mop. Shopping list n menu plan on Wednesday ready for shopping Thursday.

Tues Thurs- vac lounge n kitchen.
    Mop kitchen n bathroom
    Quick tidy
Check washing is dry and put away. We iron and go so I don't spend hours ironing but I do tend to fold items before hanging to dry then again to put away so the clothes do not take much ironing.
    Go food shopping thursday

Sat sun relax and go out with hubby n kids.

Grocery budget and petrol budget are also on my fridge door so I can keep an eye on my spending.

Menu plan also on the fridge door.
Shopping list on the fridge door to so hubby can add to it
    .

    Hope this helps abit?

I have a number of things:

Diary in my handbag. I use it for personal appointments, but this year, I also plan to log my spending and calorie intake.

    Notebook:
    To do lists
Birthday and Xmas presents I buy throughout the year
Children's clothes - I buy the next size up
Anything else don't want to forget
