Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered

Three year old Acer 8935g running Windows7.
In recent weeks my laptop screen has started blanking for a fraction of a second and coming back on with the following message.

It is happening a few times every day.
The laptop was built just before the Windows7 launch when Vista was current. I bought it with Vista installed on it and an Acer supplied Windows7 CD. I formatted the disk and installed Windows7 from scratch rather than upgrade from Vista.
I did a full reinstall of Windows7 on a new SAN SSD 128gb disk about six months ago.
I haven't had this display problem before.
Could this be a hardware problem or is it more likely to be software.
Should I reinstall the display drivers?
Thanks

I would certainly check for driver updates for the video card and possibly a BIOS update too.
Coincidentally, I bought this Dell T3600 workstation back in March and it has frequently exhibited the 'Display driver stopped responding and has recovered' issue. I have also had lots of BSODs lately too.
This Dell is set to check the Dell site monthly on the 25th and low and behold (no, I didn't see a bright star in the east) on Christmas day it automatically flushed my BIOS with an update from A09 to A11 and then updated my video card driver, Intel drivers, and USB3 Bus drivers.
Since then, touching wood now, it has behaved faultlessly. :j
I think it's all a matter of PC manufacturers keeping track of changes imposed by Windows updates and the new demands they place on system setups.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -

It gets a hell of a lot of use but it never leaves my living room so physically it is still in close to new condition as it hasn't had the battering that many well travelled laptops suffer.
I do look after it which helps but maybe I have been lucky.0 -
