Returning a laptop to retail shop

Hi all,
In some post haze xmas craziness I bought a macbook at Currys/PCWorld and I think I've realised I shouldn't have and would preferably like to return it. I know, I know. I bought it, my problem. I'm prepared to accept the consequences if I have to.
But is there anything I might be able to do in order to return it? Bullet points are.
1. Bought two days ago.
2. Couldn't test the actual model in store because they didn't have one on displayed and the laptop box was actually within a box (so I couldn't see the macbook box itself - it was like a delivery box).
3. I have unboxed and used it for maybe a couple of hours. I could probably return it to factory settings and box it back up as if it hadn't been opened (the only snag being it was shrink wrapped).
I'm not asking for underhand tactics or anything like that. Just maybe the best approach or other people's experience of trying to return a product of such cost.
Thanks,
vgjfelix

The best approach is to be truthful and polite when you go back to the store, but be prepared for them to refuse the return.
You may be lucky and find that they will take it back, but they are under no obligation whatsoever to do so.0 -
You have no right to return an opened and used item, they may use some discretion and allow it but they don't have to. They may only offer an exchange or gift card if they offer anything at all.
Why do you want to return it? changed your mind because of the price or unsure of how to use a mac?
If the latter, Macs are actually much more stable and intuitive than windows computers so with a bit of time to get used to it you may start to like it.
If they won't let you return it, Macs hold their value well so you could easily sell it for not much less than the retail price.0 -
Thanks for replies.
I've just realized that it's far too much to spend on a laptop. I understand the benefits of a Mac etc and would have put boot camp windows on for dual boot. Had one before but just don't need it.
I know they retain value well but still likely to lose a couple of hundred quid on it.
Like I say I'm not moaning or complaining. It was my choice and I'll take responsibility for whatever happens.

Are you certain it's a MacBook? I thought that was obsolete and only the MacBook Pro version was now available. (Not that it matters - I just wondered whether I'd been misinformed.)
Good luck, by the way.0 -

Good luck, by the way.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
I honestly can't see any way of them accepting a return of a used item- what on earth are they going to do with it? Even if they offered less than you paid they would still have used stock and I don't believe they sell 2nd hand items.
If you are prepared to take a loss on it, sell it on facebook or Gumtree for cash on collection. I was looking at a Mac in there , I think it was about £900, if you tried offering it at say £700 and see if you get any takers, and if not prepare to haggle to see what someone will pay.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. To answer your question it was a 15 inch Macbook Pro late 2013 (without the dedicated GPU) I was just lazy in saying exactly what model it was.
OK here's to update. I returned it successfully.
I simply said I had bought the item in Edinburgh, inspected the item and used it for an hour to make sure it worked as it was to be a present for someone. They didn't want it so I boxed it back up (all still with plastic wrapping and stuff and I made sure to unbox it carefully) and returned it back in Hull where I live.
The person I spoke to even spoke to someone else presumably to authorize it. What's more incredible is that I was refunded £60 worth of giftcards into cash (back into my account) so I technically made a profit (not that this was my plan - a somewhat risky and convoluted way of doing it!).
So I'll give positive feedback here to PC World. No arguments, no attempt to offer giftcards, they simply refunded me and I'm so relieved they did because they are a tad expensive!

Wow, you were so lucky, so well done there! Let's hope this bodes well for an excellent new year for you.
A friend bought a laptop on impulse a couple of months ago & when she got it home & took it out of the box, she realised that she should really have gone for a 17" model as being used to a desktop pc, the laptop she bought appeared rather wee to her. She returned to the store the following day to see if she could return it for a larger model but was told no as the package had been opened & didn't qualify for a return. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
