Personally I never use the digital zoom on my Samsung, can zoom in on the software on the PC.

One word of warning my Samsung eats batteries, has a screen which is not very clear in bright light and to be honest I wouldn't recommend it. It is a 7 megaixel job.

Basically forget the digital zoom, as that can easily be done when the picture is on your computer.

Ditto. Digital zoom=rubbish feature. Optical zoom is what matters, and that's why optics quality matters if you are serious about zooming (i.e. you can't get a 5mm diameter lense and expect paparazzi quality).

    Isn't "paparazzi quality" an oxymoron?

Could be ;) They must have some filters so that it looks like it was stolen in an instant from a distance to make it more sensational ;) I wouldn't mind having one of their optics though, you know, the ones which look like a bazooka and needs to be strapped around your back!

With any digital camera the bigger the optical zoom the better, the digital zoom decreases the quality of the picture. When I had a basic digital camera I just used to crop the picture on the computer to zoom in on whatever I wanted.

In contrast to the post above, my old Samsung was very good with batteries, but I have to agree on thes creen quality in bright light, the picture was almost invisible. Mind you, this was an ancient 3.2 mp (about 5 years old!)
