Operating system?
Is your PC/Laptop a custom built machine or a standard build?
If you have windows and you go to start > my computer > (right click on it) manage > device manager, do you see any yellow warning icons in the sounds and game controllers.0 -

Set a youtube clip playing. Click on the little loudspeaker icon in the system tray (bottom right of your screen) and select Mixer. This should open up the sound mixer ... then adjust up the slider for Internet Explorer sound.

Thanks, but, yep, done that, also been back into all devices and sounds etc. All sliders are at about 75%, tried higher and lower.

Well, I've just run Microsoft Fixit, it has worked for all the issues I've had over the years.
Report was that both scripting registration and settings for Windows Media streaming were corrupt. These were reported as having been fixed.
Still no sound from say youtube or cdI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

The only other setting I can think of that would affect Internet sound, but not CD is ...
From the IE toolbar select Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > scroll down to Multimedia section and see if the 'Play Sounds In Webpages' box is ticked.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -
Have you checked this old thread?

Also seem to remember, can't find links, that you could try turning off 'hardware acceleration'?
Edit:
Possibly,Hardware acceleration is a feature in Adobe Flash Player that usually delivers a better video playing experience; however, sometimes it may cause issues.
The option to disable hardware acceleration is only available for certain versions of Adobe Flash Player system plug-in and operating systems (OS). Follow these steps to see if the option is available:- Right-click on the on the video you’re having issues with
- Click Settings
- If you see the option Enable hardware acceleration, uncheck it. If you don’t see it, the option is not available for you.
- Click Close
- Refresh the page and check whether the video is working

Edited to add the accelerator thing was ticked, now not, still the same, !!!!!!?????
Also followed those links and asked as no definitive solution seems to be posted.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Just checking, on the youtube videos themselves, you have made sure the volume icon is not muted?
