Why MBNA if it was A&L?
It doesn't seem that they stopped the interest, so IMO you achieve nothing by keeping paying and burying your head in the sand. Either stop paying or contact them.

I think it's better to phone Santander rather then write to them.

I used to have an A&L card which is now MBNA.
He should raise a query with whoever he pays to now - sort code and account number should be available from his direct debit or standing order in internet banking........and take it from there.

My feeling is that if they never put him on a payment plan then interest would still be applied to his balance.

Maybe the one way to find everything out would be to SAR MBNA.

for the debt to be almost repaid suggests that interest hasn't been accumulating, doesn't it?

All this happened in the days when A&L was being assimilated into Santander and efficiency was not high on their list.

Once you have paid off the outstanding amount it may be worth closing the account just to make sure there is no further comeback.

The lack of interest and statements may simply reflect that they did something at the time to close the account subject to you paying off the outstanding amount, but just forgot to tell you? Did you change address in this period?

No. I haven't changed my address or email or telephone number. But surely if my credit report is showing all the payments I've made, then the £456 which it states is outstanding is all I have left to pay?

Don't rely on the credit file as the information can be not up to date. Contact the bank and ask for a statement.

It showed me making a payment in December. I made the payment on the 15th and it said the file had been updated on the 20th. I'm going to pay the balance in full in January and then ring and ask for confirmation that the account is closed in writing. Interesting it also says that the regular payment required was £200 per month. I didn't know anything about that either but I'm glad I didn't as I've been paying at least £300 or £350 per month on payday plus whatever is left over in my account at the end of the month. I might have been tempted to stick to the £200 if I'd known about it :)

  • My tuppence worth:
    1. My A & L card was sold to MBNA.

    2. These agreements all seem to have gone missing for some reason. I have the same we can't find it letter.

    3. The SARs are very useful, and show PPI on mine. Mine was taken out in 2001.

    Thanks very much.

Who has liability in a successful PPI claim do you think? A&L or MBNA?
