Query re: Egg PPI appearing on account

Hi there,

Has anyone had any experience of PPI starting to appear on an Egg credit card account well into the account, rather than when the account was opened?

I started looking into my Egg PPI as I know I called them at one point to remove PPI which had started appearing, as I didn't need or want it, and they were very resistant to taking it off the account and tried to talk me out of it. I remember having to insist on it being removed. I opened the card account in 2003 and on investigating recently Barclayard (who took over the account) have confirmed that PPI started being applied in 2005, and was removed later in 2005 when I called to remove it. The PPI team rep said that he had seen a few cases like this, with PPI appearing well into the account, not at the time of setting up. Although it was a while back I am quite sure that I did not request this be added on 2 years into the account, as I had cover through work, and the fact that I called them just a few months later to have this taken off would also back up the fact that I didn't request it.

I wondered if anyone else had something similar with Egg, where it started appearing some time in, or whether it started appearing without your request/knowledge outside of the application process?

In addition, anyone starting to investigate their Egg PPI situation should be aware that when I called Barclaycard, the call handler told me repeatedly that I did not have any PPI on my account. It was only on insisting that they were wrong and that I wanted to see my Egg statements proving this that they put me through to their PPI team, who confirmed immediately that I did have PPI on the account and did not know why I had been told otherwise, because the initial call handler wouldn't have had access to that information. I find this incident disturbing and have seen another forum user posting about a similar situation, where they were told there was no PPI on their Egg account until they insisted otherwise and continued to challenge it.

Any advice on either situation above is appreciated :)

  • I have this very issue with an old Egg credit card but it is now with the Ombudsman because Egg couldn't explain how the account started off with none then was added 5 months later.

    Most credit card PPI is added post sale over the phone. So, its very common to see it appear later.

    If the policy was cancelled in 2005 it would not show on Barclaycard's frontline systems hence why the first agent you spoke to would not have seen it; as far as they could tell you had no PPI, and certainly don't have it currently active on the account like they said. The PPI team agent you spoke to most likely had more search tools that included your Egg history rather than your Barclaycard history and found it there.

    Be interested to hear what happened with this as I have just found I had 2
    Cards one egg one morgan Stanley/goldfish both now barclaycard where the ppi was taken out a couple of years into the account. Trying to work out how it was added!

    I doubt you'll find out. They haven't been back since.

    You probably had a replacement card and when you called to 'activate' it, it was added then.

    This, in itself, is not a valid mis-selling reason.

    PPI was not randomly added without the knowledge and permission of the customer. It's a myth sponsored by Claim Companies that this happened and if you previously had no knowledge of this PPI being added you've simply forgotten. Clearly you also haven't been checking your statements where the PPI would have appeared every month when your accounts had a balance.
