Female solo travelling

Options
I'm thinking of going away in May. I have 2 weeks off and want to spend some of it away.

I want to head to Dubrovnik for a few days and I plan on going alone as timings aren't suitable for friends or family. It would be a shame not to go somewhere just because I can't find a travel buddy.

Has anybody else been on holiday alone and did you find it a challenge not being able to share your excitement or was it an enjoyable experience?

It's not backpacking but I'm still a female travelling alone

Sometimes I find it better travelling alone (don't let my username on here fool you - I am in fact a single female). Being alone means that it is easier to strike up conversations with people which is not always easy to do when you are in a couple.

Keep your wits about you and you will be fine.
  • My main concern is telling my mum! She would worry. I'm 24 rather than 18 though.

Ps I get you about the don't be fooled by the username thing!

I did something similar. I wanted to go to Australia, and all my friends said they did too, but always made excuses. Eventually, I got fed up waiting for them so went by myself when I was 26. It was pretty nerve-wracking at first but I had a brilliant time. I stayed in hostels and met loads of people so I wasn't alone but was free to do what I wanted rather than making compromises. You do have to be a bit more alert, but then you should be anyway.

Dubrovnik is gorgeous btw, but very expensive.

  • The idea of no compromise definitely appeals to me.I have never been on a holiday without compromise!

I've been away twice on my own now. Granted they were beach/hotel/apartment based holidays rather than sightseeing ones but it was still a bit nerve wracking at first to be going solo. I loved it though...I didn't have to worry about anyone else and I came back so relaxed that I did it all again the year after.

I was 24 for my first one too and my mum was really nervous about it so I chose somewhere that we'd been going to for many years as a family so it was a bit easier to stop the worry. The second time I stayed in a work colleague's apartment on Tenerife.

Whether you go beach based or something more adventurous just stay alert to the risks whilst enjoying the complete freedom of doing exactly what you want to do.

The only part I found difficult was evening meals , so I avoided them by eating in cafe type establishments earlier, or self catering.
It may sometimes be worth wearing a ring, or at least having one available with you.i loved the fact I could do exactly what I wanted, very liberating.friends have been envious and would like to accompany me , but I don't want to have to consider anyone else's wishes.in fact it's spoiled me for travelling with others again. Be sensible-never let your guard down.

I have done a lot of travelling alone and love it. You can go at your own pace and plan your schedule, unrestricted by others preferences. So you get to make the most of what you want from a trip. In most places rarely do you stay by yourself for long. It is normally easy to get chatting to people as and when you want to. Go for it and have a lovely time is my advice.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

I love travelling alone. No compromises! You also have a completely different experience. You tend to find that people will chat to you whereas a lot of people will not approach a couple or group of people.

I don't worry about eating alone, but it can be a pain when travelling alone simply because restaurants often don't appreciate single people clogging up tables in busy periods. I would often have my evening meal between 5:30-6:30 when the restaurants are quieter and then buy a snack to have in my hotel later on.

Most of my traveling has been alone, in fact its about 5 years ago when I met OH and could go with someone. Happy alone, happy as part of a couple.
Am not picky and can plan stuff by myself, for myself and can also compromise with OH.
Lone traveling is different and females, sadly have to be more aware.
