Self Assessment Wrong?

Options
Hi All,

Mr & Mrs AO been on self-assessments for a bit, due to renting house out.

Mr AO earning, paying 20% on income from house at end of self assessment.

Mrs AO not earning, student/housewife no income. Just received tax bill for £60?

How do you go about having this recalculated? We rang them when we first had the assessment months ago, they said they would sort it. Now its due Jan 14.?

Maybe you entered something incorrectly on the return. Check back through it and see if everything is correct.

The wording of your post suggests to me that you and Mrs AO submitted paper Returns and something has gone wrong at HMRC during processing (somebody at HMRC typing into the system the figures from your paper Returns).
That should have been pretty simple for HMRC to fix, and send you an amended assessment, when you rang them but they haven’t.
If that is the case you need to ring them again.
Perhaps more importantly, if you are absolutely sure that Mrs AO’s Return is correct and that she owes no tax, there is no need to pay the £60. Mrs AO may be threatened with penalties, interest and surcharges but they will all melt into nothing when whatever is wrong is corrected and her liability is reduced to nil.
If you are not absolutely sure it may be wiser to pay the £60 now and claim it back later.

my guess would be gift aid payments entered.

As no tax paid, the OP is asked to pay the tax that the charities will be claiming.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. Dont have a copy of the forms to hand, they were copied from last years tax submission. Its a bit weird, as she has had her replies, but ive not had any.

A phone call to HMRC is required.

But you've just said that Mrs AO is earning and has got an income - she's letting out a house. That income has to have the due tax paid on it
