Not so much a vent, more a subdued muttering, but I couldn't find the minor grumbles section so I decided to post here.
My son is a student living away from home and has returned home for Christmas. My wife decided to kit him out with some new clothes before he goes back, so took him to M and S on boxing day. In the store the changing rooms were closed, with a sign up saying they are closed for something like 14 days over the holiday period. There were very few customers in the shop at the time.
What is the point of that? Surely one of the main reasons for going to a bricks and mortar store rather than buying online is to try things on? They left and went elsewhere, where he could try on the trousers, but it is no surprise that M and S are struggling if they pull stunts like that.

Skeleton staff? Staff off sick? No staff to man fitting rooms.0

Seems odd to me to close the changing room unless they are refurbishing etc.
Did they close them to make space for busy shoppers?
I have not seen the store so can not comment.
However with items like trousers I would not buy them, unless I could try them on first. So if I was going to buy trousers from the store they would loose a sale, if I was the customer.0 -
It's only in last ten years or so that M&S have had changing rooms. Previously they drove dedicated on their returns policy and people tried things in at home.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
They always close the changing rooms when the after Christmas sale starts. No idea? More shoplifting and less staff perhaps.0

I was in NEXT. They were closed too. Maybe as previous people have said it is due to shop lifting?Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0

My partner and I never use shop dressing rooms. If she's trying something on she likes my opinion and vice versa. A lot of shops dont allow 2 people in a changing room, or have male and female areas separate. Neither of us want to get changed and show off in front of each other in front of a group of waiting customers.
Now we just check the shops return process, buy all the clothes we want to try on and just return the ones we dont want!0 -
Thanks for all the replies folks - it seems to be a company policy running right through the festive period.
I don't shop in Next, but the Next sale is like a rugby scrum and the fact they put restrictions on during the sale is well publicised. M and S has a problem in that people expect more from them than they do from other companies, and they often don't seem to deliver!0 -
