How do I retrieve my files?

So, I can't turn my laptop on at all.

How can I retrieve my files? It was suggested that I take out the HDD, connect the HDD to a computer and do it that way.

The laptop is a Dell 1750.

Thank you.

I suppose making the suggestion that you retrieve the files from your daily/weekly backup external drive which you will have been doing (?) is a waste of time.........

    In the meantime
Yes, it will be a 2.5 inch sized drive as it is a laptop not a 3.5" drive for a desktop.
Hope whatever has blown in the laptop has not damaged the hard drive when it failed.
Remove disk (some are easier than others to remove in laptops) and put it in a multi-use/size hard disk caddy - they have a USB lead with them to connect to another computer.
Then pray and hope it still works - and then start doing some backups.

Yes the suggested way is easiest. Or buy an external hard drive caddy which then plugs in via USB or eSATA to another computer or laptop.

No response/lights etc at all or just that it won't boot up?

Try removing the AC adaptor and battery then holding down the power button for 30 seconds
Had the same problem with a laptop of mine a while ago

Not saying it will work but worth a try

Take the HDD out of the machine. Google or search YouTube with your make and model for visual guides. Remove mains lead AND battery before doing this.

Establish if HDD is IDE or SATA. Visual guides online.

Buy 'USB caddy' or 'drive enclosure' to match your type of HDD.

Connect this to another PC, copy/paste files.
