credit file check negative - help

Hello,

I am usually very careful (I even used to stooze in those good old days) but today after an exhausting boxing day shopping, I very lazily said ok to the very helpful girl in the counter who wanted me to take a card that would give me 10% discount on my shopping. That it was a credit card did strike me when she started taking down all details but I blame it on mental fatigue I did not ask her to stop the process. Anyway after some time she told me that the credit check has come as negative. This is some kind of Debenham-Santander operation.

This has never happened to me before! I think there can be two reasons. 1) I took a 40K home improvement loan as part of the mortgage three months ago just before shifting house as I know it will be difficult to get a remortgage for a year or so as I am now in probation in my new employment 2) I am now in a rented flat in a new place while my mortgage is on my old address.

So, I don't know if this can be the reason but the credit check has come negative. Is there anything I can do to erase that negative check. Obviously I don't want that card but I am aware a negative result will stay on my file and will affect my next application. I feel very bad as I am usually very very careful and have never had a rejection for a card / loan / mortgage till now.

Please tell me what to do. Thanks. G.

All you can realistically do us spend £6 getting your 3 x £2 statutory files from the CRA's and use this as your resource to check.

Any 'score' is meaningless, as are the reasons for rejection. So take it easy and look upon it as divine providence!

If you are not on the electoral roll at your current address that would be a big negative.

That's not quite accurate - a search will show on your credit report but there will be no indication of whether you were accepted or refused.

Get your £2 statutory report from Experian or Equifax or sign up for Noddle for free to see what's on your credit report.

Thanks, and yes, we are not yet on the electoral roll of new address.

I didn't realise a credit search will not show if i was accepted / rejected. But since it won't have a credit limit obviously whoever checks will know i didnt get the card, right? Which is why i asked about erasing the check.

do the people who search get to see all the info on my file - have not applied for one till now because of the hassle of it.

I can't remember all the details but I think there is a Tier 1 search, which all lenders will see and a tier 2 search (usually insurances) which they won't.

A lender will be able to see that you applied for a card and don't have it, but for all they know you might have been accepted but changed your mind and decided not to take the card.

That's right, the search footprint doesn't include the decision. The data lenders see on your credit report is also anonymised (if that's a word!) so it wouldn't be immediately obvious whether a card had been opened. So don't worry about that but, as others have said, do take the opportunity to review your credit reports to make sure everything is in order. You can also press the lender (not the shop) to tell you their main reason for saying no. Find out the details for the underwriting department and drop them a line. Only they know the reason and they may reveal something that helps you in the future.

I am away till the New Year but will do this once I am back. Both apply for file as well as talk to Santander. I just think shops should not offer credit cards because one is not in the same frame of mind as one is when applying for a credit card!
