Absence for the death of a close family member where I worked would be unpaid and (not sure) but could go down as you not being there that day.

It all sounds fair to me.

Glad I don't work where you worked. In the last 2 and a half years I've had 3 close family deaths (2 parents, 1 spouse). We get 5 days full pay as a matter of policy. Any more is discretionary.

    Hi,

    Just a quick one.

Someone I know who works for them has told me that recently M&S have changed their contract so that new people who start with them have to put up with this:
    • 2nd instance of sickness within 3 months isn't paid on the first day
    • You can now no longer opt out of Sundays
    • If you take leave from work for bereavement this will count towards your absence and will effect your eligibility for a pay rise at the end of the year

I know employment law is a hard one to say 'legal/illegal' but...is it
    ?

    Thanks.

Trouble is no one cares, not even current employees.

I work public sector and as well as changes to T&C they are cutting the pay of at least 20% of staff by as much as 1/3rd and the union and staff are accepting the offer if they are okay and not losing pay. They don't give a stuff about those facing losing such a huge chunk of their pay and just take the attitude of "get another job" - which in current climate is easier said than done.

Who are these 20% of staff who are getting (up to) a 1/3rd pay cut? I'm surprised I haven't heard it mentioned

Not sure where the figure came from but there certainly are a lot of jobs being outsourced to private contractors who pay poverty wages and where jobs remain in the public sector they are often subject to grade drift

There was no policy - my bosses father died and he was back in 2 days and 1 day off for the funeral which I know was un paid.

After I left a senior member of the teams husband had a heart attack and crashed his car at the same time. It was 50/50 if he'd make it so of course she wanted to be at the bed side. Was told to take the time as holiday!!

So, according to M+S employment rules you can opt out of selling alcohol and pork products but have to work Sunday....sounds fair

Ones employers is not ones mother. If you are offered a job on certain terms, either take it or leave it.

Try explaining that to the Job Centre then.
  • This is the problem with retail, in my experience. Half of the workers are middle aged and are either management or have very low level jobs.

If you don't like the terms they impose then you can either accept it or take a hike. I used to work full time (42hrs) in retail, now I'm part time (29hrs) due to children and I make more now than I did then.

It's no harder just in a different industry and any person in retail could do it.

Good luck trying to get anyone in retail to strike :rotfl: I don't think anyone has ever striked in it's history

It's just a shame that in the first 2 years you basically have no rights.
