Council house buying plan

Hi,
firstly, I have no idea about how the buyin houses system works so bear with me.
I'm currently in an IVA so getting a mortgage isn't an option (I am lead to believe) ...so my plan is to get a council house and look at buying it after my IVA has finished, is this a good idea? Also, I am due to leave the RAF so getting a council place shouldn't be a problem
Cheerz

Buying a council house is a great idea if you already have one. Problem is that may social housing stock is owned by housing assosciation and doesnt have "right to buy" . In my area. coming out of the services doesnt give you ary more housing points. My son has been told to private rent when he comes out of the Navy after 9 years, as council has limited stock. He has been on housing list since before he went in the navy.
Could be different in other areas or if you have a partner and family

I am goin to be living in the North West (Lancashire) and its covered by a scheme called New Progress. I have spoke to them and got there information pack and I get extra preference when coming out of the forces.
I am also under the impression that it is extremely hard to rent whilst under an IVA which I will be for over 4 more years so it seems the best option.£18,666 debt September 2006

Unfortunately what they say and what actually happens is two different things, I hope for your sake there is available housing but I know where I am the housing lists are at the highest levels for years and no houses.
It would be a great idea in theory so I hope it works out for you

Put it this way. The more people who have a similar idea to the one you have, the fewer council houses there are going to be in the future.
