Returning goods

Will someone please settle an ongoing family argument?
A item was purchased at normal price before Xmas and given as a present.
The recipient of the present does not want it and would like to return it.
The recipient returns the item back to the shop with the original receipt (cash).
As the item is now reduced by 20% in the sale the person returning the article is given the original cost minus 20%.
Is this correct legally?

Yes, they don't have to take it back at all.

You are only entitled to a refund if the goods are faulty or not fit for purpose.

It's a goodwill gesture not a legal requirment, therefor if you want cash they dictate the terms.

Yes thank you both for your replies.
I should have said that this generic store does have a 30 day no quibble returns policy for all purchases from them.

Sorry Bris you seem to have posted before I could get my digits moving.

If merely returning as unwanted, it will be down to policy of store the larger ones M&S ,John Lewis ,etc will refund original purchase price, but smaller companies, may only refund at current selling price.
    Which store was it?

If they offer a 30 day change of mind and the item return is within that timescale most stores will refund the full price. If depends how they process the refund though some will scan the item and may not notice the price difference which will manually have to be adjusted if pointed out. Some will scan the receipt which should refund at the full price automatically.
