Catchup if old sky box

My M-in-L has an old style (not HD) box that was put in her flat by housing society as they could not get any reception in flats from normal Aerial, so had 6 months free trial from sky but could not afford monthly payment so did not have sky after the free trial period. However she still gets normal tv through the box even though not paying sky. Is there anyway she could get catchup tv or would she have to pay sky monthly fee to get it? Would appreciate any advice. many thanks.

no she would need sky+ hd box plus sky subscription. Plus a Broadband connection.

Or throw the Sky box away and get YouView.

YouView is terrestrial so needs an aerial.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

You could get her a Sky+ box secondhand for around £20 then subscribe to Freesat from Sky for just over £10 a month. Or get her a Humax Foxsat box which will cost more but does not need a subscription but is not so easy to use as the Sky box.
This will let her record the programs she wants, not catchup.

Freesat from Sky is subscription free, thats where the fee bit comes from. Anyhoo OP wants catchup so would need a fairly recent Sky+ HD box.

Sorry penrhyn Freesat from Sky may be free but in order to use the record and other + features you have to pay just over £10 a month.

If she wants catchup TV, and has a satellite connection, she wants a <freetime> box. This is Freesat, with on demand nicely integrated. If she wants to record 2 things at the same time, she would need 2 feeds from the dish, but can get by without that. And of course decent broadband.
