Problem with 2005 Vauxhall Astra MK5

Right, I'm hoping some tech savy person can help me please :)

So yesterday I went out to my car at around 1:30am to drive home. My car had been fine all day when driving it but this I noticed that the the exhaust emission light was on. I've had this problem before but the light flashed meaning I had to slow down until it stopped flashing and drive at that speed. However this time the light never flashed regardless of the speed.

So I got home and did a pedal test and got the following error codes;
P0136
P0141

Now I did a search online and I believe that this error is to do with the o2 sensor, in particular the sensor near the cat converter on my exhaust. Is this correct?

I did some more research online and it said to check the wiring, if not replace the sensor which looks easy enough and the part cost around £70. Before I do buy this though it this definitely the problem?

thanks

    The sensor is in the exhaust, so it's unlikely to be easy - it may require heating or cutting out!

    Can't say 'definitely' but it seems the likely cause in this case because of the two related codes.

    Ive watched a video online and it shows all you have to do is disconnect the wire under the car and unscrew the sensor and pull it out

    that's all it is yes.

    but some sensors do weld themselves in the hole, ive not had this problem, but others have and you should allow time and a plan for this as a contingency in this event.

    You can test the sensors with op com or equivalent.The o2 sensor before the cat should read a stable voltage and the one after the cat should fluctuate between high and low then you know the sensors, wiring are OK .If the sensor after the cat does not change voltage then the cat could be faulty
  • Some of the hardest jobs I've ever done on cars were "easy". Give it a go yourself; worst case it's rust-welded in & you'll have to take her to your local friendly garage to get some heat on it & it might cost you half hour's labour (if the problem is as diagnosed).

    Nothing ventured...
  • Thanks for all your reply's! I changed the sensor today and the problem is now resolved :)
