Last time I used one there was an option to use Pingit. Didn't choose it, since I wasn't using it.
I think that option might have been to register for Pingit, because you need your debit card to register, either using PINSentry or a Barclays cash machine.

So I guess the "Spring 2014" date simply means you'll be able to do it from your own banks online banking and mobile app?

Yes, you won't need to have a special 'app' to do it or to register with Barclays (as is the case to use Pingit).

Instead, the system will work with all the big banks - just use your mobile number and a database will check which account is registered with that number and send the money to that account automatically.

Will that mean you have to have a different mobile number registered for each bank account?

I'd imagine so, else otherwise it wouldn't know where to send the money. Most people only have a single mobile phone and a lot of people only a single bank account, so it's not a problem.

Other people will probably just register their "main" account.

A few people have several current accounts for the various benefits (for me I have 3 Halifax accounts for the rewards, one smile account, and one nationwide which is being set up now), others have a lot more accounts, all have my mobile number associated with them incase they need to get hold of me for fraud detection purposes. I assume I could register the main account for the new service but keep my mobile number on the others for contact purposes
  • It is not very reassuring to know that in the US where it has already been introduced that S1bn fraud occurs.

It would be a terrible situation if customers accounts were debited each time the cheque was deposited.
