Extended Warranty for a new MacBook Pro

Hey all,

So I have been kindly offered money from my mum as a xmas pressie to buy a new mac book pro 15 inch which I hope is a good purchase for a laptop however I know little about mac and stuff and I would like some form of peace of mind like incase anything bad happens to it. So I am wondering is it worth buying an extended warranty? is so who should I go for? If not what can I do to protect my purchase other than been super careful?

Thank you all for the help and advice!

If you know very little about macs, then how is it that you think a mac is for you? Is it the specific mac apps that you want to use?

If its just on a whim, then just consider a high end laptop rather than spending more than necessary.

Just as a point of reference I use a macbook pro - which I mainly got for Final cut pro, Photoshop and Lightroom..

Warranty or insurance? If you dropped it, warranty won't necessarily cover it. If you want warranty for in case of faults only, then you could buy the machine from John Lewis whom automatically give 2 years guarantee. Alternatively, buy Applecare which gives you 3 years warranty plus unlimited support. £279 RRP or about £200 on eBay. Applcare can be applied within 12 months of product purchase so you can wait a bit before buying it.

Insurance is a different ball game and won't cover you for faults. More for theft and accidental damage. Not sure what the best company is for that. Protect my Bubble? I suggest getting a hard shell case or something if you want to look after the item.

If you don't need much processing power, the Macbook Air is pretty nice but I don't know what you're going to use the thing for.

Hey StuC75 thanks for your reply, to answer your question I actually do a bit about macs as I used one of the first ones which came out when they were been made, however I don't know anything about them now however I am attracted by its graphical user interface and its sleek design, I have in the past purchased a high end laptop and have been plagued with issues and I just would like to buy something with a little more quality! So do you have an extended warranty on your laptop?

as above, apple offer an extended warranty service, but not their own in-house insurance.

I just bought a 13" rMBP from apple with their extended warranty.... I should also point out that if you're a student, you can get a substantial discount like I did (in addition with a free extended warranty - but for hardware only; it was an additional £49 or £50 to include software warranty).

For insurance, I looked at protectmybubble, but found that Endsleigh were cheaper! (plus I compared experiences when customers made any claims).

Another thing to consider, if you're gonna be carrying around the laptop quit a bit, I would recommend the 13" model (although not as powerful, much more portable!)

Another thing to consider, some bank accounts allow you to extend warranties on items, luckily my bank does this, so I was able to extend my warranty by another 2 years - meaning my rMBP has 5 years warranty!
