name change after wedding

Options
Is this a simple process? I got married in Jamaica in May, but only recently received my marriage certificate. What do i do, just take it in and explain? I'm kinda worried as i have my student account and a platinum account, will it affect anything IE my overdrafts.... or am i worrying for nothing?Simply new bank cards, checkbook etc?
Seems silly but my granny has written me a cheque in my married name and clearly i cant cash it......
Also i have pretty good credit with my bank, if my husband and i was to open a joint account would my good credit blend with his and he'd get similar perks as me? (Two overdrafts, not in use may i add, i am well in the black, two savings accounts with a fair bit in each and a new ISA that's creeping up nicely). Or does all this have no bearing on what we'd get if we had a joint account.
Reason i am asking is, he recently set up a LTD company and needs a business account. If we had a joint account (please don't moan, i know we are married and effectively should have one but until now i haven't seen the point) would this affect him getting a business account. With RBS BTW and since they announced going back to original name and policies Ive got along with them much better!!!

I suspect i'm flapping over nothing but not sure whats what with banks, been with RBS since i was 16 and im not keen on change!!!!

Cash it in first and then change the name?

I think it works in one direction only, i.e. a good credit history can be affected by a bad one, not vice versa. That's why you have to think twice before getting joint financial products unless it's unavoidable.

    Not necessarily.

Re changing the name just check the bank's website:
How do I change my name with the bank?
How do I change my personal details with the Bank?
How do I amend my name or address with the Bank?

it's not uncommon that people get married and adopt their husbands name : banks are used to this

there is no reason to get joint a/cs unless you specifically want to and certainly not if either person has a poor credit record

why not simply open a saving a/c in your new married name and pay the cheque in : you may need to do this in branch with your marriage cert.

    Not necessarily.

Wrong way round on the first part as they say the cheque is in their married name not maiden.

Joint current accounts are slightly different, or certainly with the "premier" type accounts. Natwest, Barclays & Lloyds all said for their top end accounts that only one party needed to have an excellent credit score and meet their criteria and the spouse can then be added and gain the benefits even if they have a low rating as long as there are no CIFAS loads or outstanding CCJs etc

Natwest Black was slightly different in that they want a £100k salary for a single account and something like £150k for a joint account however that could be one person earning that rather than requiring the spouse to have any salary.

Keep at least one account in your maiden name. Then if you receive a payment using that name you have somewhere easily accessible to lodge it.

Some people choose to change nothing on marriage, not name, passport, driving licence, income tax....................................

I don't know about other banks but, even after I changed my accounts into my married name, Santander still accepted cheques in my maiden name.

HSBC would be the same and would accept the cheques in a maiden name. They would just need signing on the back in that name i.e endorsing.
