Covering someone else's shift / travel costs over Christmas period

Hello again,
Thanks everyone for your opinions, they have been helpful. In the end though my Mum was available to drive me and I have given her petrol money. I am not expecting that this other girl will give me anything.
I am grateful for the chance to earn some good money which is going to be spent very productively. However, I doubt I will do anything similar in the future, particularly unless I clarify every aspect of the exchange to avoid any ambiguity over it.

I'm glad it worked out in the end.
The bit in bold is a pretty good approach to life's interactions. Not just covering shifts at Christmas.0
