  • If you are going for a temp. fix, you could stick fibreglass over the area that's leaking.

    What would that involve?

'Scuse my ignorance here...but does fibreglass come in some sort of spray-on formula and that is what you are thinking of? (ie akin to those ads I see sometimes for spraying an "undercoating" on underneath a roof slates).

Would this be a permanent fix or a temporary fix (ie how long would it last?).

As mentioned, there are thousands of homes which do not have any felt and rely on tiles/slates for a water tight seal. It needs a good looking at to identify where the water is getting in,fix that issue and perhaps some sectional re-felting in any affected areas..of course we cant see the job so it may indeed require major surgery.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Done short term fixes often, so go for a 'patch' repair. Identify worst felt/membrane and replace in that area, and above that there will probably be visible cracked tiles or ridges need attention. Talking in the lower hundreds rather than thousands and will 'tide you over' until finances allow a better solution.

Don't run into £kkk so fast!

Can I cut through some of the above comments for you, as a building contractor. You don't really need roofing felt / breathable membrane at all. It is a secondary measure in order to stop snow blow being a problem , also helps during the construction progress as it keeps the property dry until the final roof covering goes on. I suspect from the dates mentioned , your felt is called zylex and patching it in reality is very rarely successful. It will be so brittle , every time you try and patch into it ,it will break more. Just doesn't work. As said, your roof shouldn't leak anyway , it could be just a simple broken roof tile and nothing more. Don't go for fibre glass repair ,it will look horrendous and is just hiding the underlining issue and solving nothing. As for cost , cant comment. Depends what the problem is ,how big the roof is , whether the proposed works would require a scaffold or not. ( if a contractor requires scaffolding and you say no as your not prepared to pay for it, if he goes on your roof any way and falls off , you will find yourself in court under health and safety regs). See from your profile that you are from cymru, certainly not touting for work but if you look at my user name and if im any where near local , more than willing to give you a free independent advice and estimate for the works.
