Why not pay for a CHAPS transfer, or try and negotiate a lower fee?
The first option will likely 'clear' before your cheque does anyway (especially at this time of year with all the weekends and Bank Holidays we have), and the second might not be as costly (relatively speaking) as you'd imagine.
The staggered transfer is a good idea, and one I used to transfer money to my son.
Saves all the questions, and bank staff getting over excited with thinking they can sell you a product lol
