Samsun laptop, kaput

Hi folks,

I bought a Samsung Laptop from Currys in May this year.

Earlier this month it wouldn’t charge properly, its like the charger no longer fits, if I very gently insert the charger and get it to a certain position it will charge but the slightest vibration stops it.

Initially I thought it might be the charger itself, so I went into Maplin to get a new one. Unfortunatley none of the universal chargers fir the laptop. They guy in the shop told me he had a similar problem with his laptop and said it could be problem with the port (which conects direclty into the motherboard).

what options do I have?

Will currys replace my laptop? (most of my stuff is backed up so I'm not to concerned about losing any info)

Will they try and repair it? (will I have to pay for this? Also I use my laptop alot or work so I'm not keen on being without it for a while)

will I need to send it back to the manufacturer? ( Again I'm concerend about how logn this will take)

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Your contract is with the retailer so take it back there. If the fault is inherent then they have to repair, replace or refund. You can specify the option you want, but can't force them into a remedy that is more expensive than one of the others so effectively they get to pick. If the fault is inherent then the remedy they offer should be entirely at their cost so you shouldn't pay anything. Oh, and if they offer a refund it can be partial to account for your usage.

Technically they could require you to prove the fault is inherent because it is more than 6 months since you purchased it. I'd take it to them and see what they say first though.

Bear in mind, charger port damage is by default considered user caused damage and the repair would be at your cost, if you don't want to pay you will almost certainly need to have a report to say its inherent.

It does sound like the port has physical damage and wouldn't be covered under warranty or SoGA

My brother had a similar issue with his HP laptop, the charging port was not working.

They charged him £60 for the repair as they said he had damaged it with rough treatment. I wouldn't deny that for a second. The amount of times I've tried to jam my iPhone charger in ioside down I wouldn't be surprised if it fails on me!

It's very likely you'll have to pay for the repair.

If you take it into store, it will be sent to Samsung for repair. If they deem that the fault is due to misuse, they may charge you for the courier and/or repair (if you choose for them to repair it).

You can also arrange direct with Samsung if it's less hassle (0330 726 7864)
