Help with Honda required

A few months ago our honda CRV started making a funny noise, it was the very early in the morning so we took it to our local garage ( who opens very early) but who is not a honda dealer. He replaced the crank shaft pulley which was disintegrating. The car is not "new" but is a 58 plate with average mileage, driven carefully and well maintained and serviced at regular intervals. Our mechanic told us he's never seen one of these go on a CRV before 120k miles. We haven't done half of that. He suggested we speak to Honda as the part should have lasted much longer.
We spoke to our local dealer but as the car (which we bought from them) was out of warranty we should speak to Honda them selves. We have emailed them and after being ignored have been told basically that it's tough. It wasn't a cheap part to replace. £500 including the labour.
Husband has just got off the phone with someone from customer services, they are refusing to even look at the faulty part ( which we still have) or discuss the issue.
We have had Hondas for the past 15 years and are really disgusted with the quality of customer care from them at the top. Does this come under sale if goods act, not fit for purpose? Advice please!!

A five year old car with 'average' mileage = 60K plus?
It's out of warranty.
Modern crankshaft pulleys often are isolated by rubber which will, as you know, break down over time.
Usage, conditions, driving style could all affect the life of the pulley.
It might be worth asking your local mechanic just how many 5 year old CRVs he's replaced the pulleys on to come to his judgement - I seriously doubt that it's enough for his estimate to be statistically significant.
Things go wrong with cars. I don't think you're going to get anywhere with Honda or that SOGA will be able to be applied here. Chalk it up to experience.0 -
As above, faults with Honda crank pulleys (and their bolts) aren't unique, I guess your local mechanic hasn't been around very long.
Secondly, and I'm sure you'll understand on reflection, no manufacturer is even going to look at a failure when they are presented with the bits allegedly taken from a fixed car.0 -
There does in life, become a point that it is "your car".
This sounds like one of those situations.Be happy...;)0 -
Sales of goods act?
As it's over 6 months old, you'd have to prove there is an inherent fault. As Honda haven't seen loads of them time to move on.0 -
Not really sure what the issue is, old car needs some work which is not massively expensive.0

If you wanted them to entertain a goodwill claim then you usually need to fulfil two criteria.
1, the vehicle has a full and complete main dealer service history.
2, you should have taken it into the dealer for diagnosis for this fault.
Even Toyota would baulk at coughing up for parts that were diagnosed and replaced by any old local garage ltd.0 -
Thanks for your replies. Thought I would ask for opinions, gauge what others thought. You never know how strong you are until you have no other option.0
