I renewed my AA cover last year over the phone. Unbeknownst to me they had set up a CPA.
This year the renewal came up but I received no paperwork so was shocked to find the money left my account when my balance was zero.
I had a long chat with the AA and agreed to renew but stated I didn't want a CPA. They agreed.
Due to an attempted fraud on my account I now have a new card.
Just received a letter from the AA they have attempted to set up a CPA from my account, but due to the change of number they Were unable to do so.
How can this happen? How can companies set up CPA without permission?

Because they had the details and were incompetent and tried without your permission. You have to give consent under the regulations to set up a CPA, but that can be in writing or verbally depending on the arrangements they have in place. Allows companies to misuse the system. You are actually lucky that they failed to set it up, as a change of card details doesn't always stop that.Still rolling rolling rolling......<

So what do we need to do? Why are the banks allowing it to happen without permission.
I categorically stated I didn't want a a CPA and the original payment was November. Now 6-7 Weeks later they try to set one up.0 -
Because once they have your details the banks take their word that you authorised it. It would cost too much to have a system that checked properly, so they prefer to let their customers get screwed.Still rolling rolling rolling......

They have no knowledge of a CPA between you and the AA.
It is straightforward these days to ask your bank to stop a CPA to the AA then if they do set it up they can't access your money, or if they do get it the bank will refund you.0 -
Well as I had a change of card number it failed, should I contact the bank and ask them not to allow CPA's at all on my account?0

What do you think?
If you don't want CPAs set up, tell wherever the funds would be taken from.0 -
I had the exact same thing happen to me from the AA. I rang them up and requested a full refund under the 14 day cancellation policy. After a lot of discussion, they decided to offer me the full refund I requested, plus another year free of charge, limited to a single call out.
They also stated that membership without CPA is available, but would cost more as it requires more administration on their side.0 -

Not sure they would do that as the regulations only seem to allow withdrawal of consent for existing CPAs, rather than speculatively for future ones.Still rolling rolling rolling......<
